And so is Valve. Half-Life is based on the QuakeWorld engine. The best FPS imo (as MDK is third person ).

Well, Valve developed Source for Half-Life 2 and thus 'moved forward', while Raven is 'just' using other people's technology. That said, I completely agree that it was the right decision for ID to have Raven make Q4 and I surely wouldn't mind if they continue the work.

Great, interesting series. I was never much into PC games, so this is the first I've really heard of this game, except the brief mention in the last episode.

Loved the Daikatana episode as well.

Almost getting tired of saying this by now, but another great episode

Would be interesting to see what the game would have turned out like had things gone better. I just remember blasting a ton of bugs and thinking 'to hell with this' and uninstalling... wasn't very patient back then

I think the big problem was that Romero was pulling in the reigns. He said as much in the video about how he didn't think the new team could handle the glorious vision he had for Quake. I really wish he'd just gone for it anyway, and he certainly should have had his hands very deeply in the coding process. You just can't hype something to that degree and not deliver something truly spectacular.

Of course, it must have been exponentially more difficult with each iteration to keep upping the ante so much. It also sucks that the technology was changing so fast that a 3-year development cycle left you looking pretty raw by the end of it. I think it'd be better now, since the economy has pretty much put a hold on how fast PCs are being upgraded (or how long it'll be before we see a new generation of consoles).

this episode was the greatest. It's just good to get into Romero's head and know what really happened during the Daikatana days. I hope something like that will never happen to me, as I'll crash under that amount of unprofessional backstabbing.
