Alone in the Dark 2 and 3 had quite a subtle way of communicating the background story. In "7th Guest" players were rewarded by revaling bits of information.

With text only adventures "A Mind Forever Voyaging" springs to my mind.

PS:Torment is exceptional, of course.

jeez txt only adventures - i forgot all about them. I used to love them too.
torment too - loved that.
then there is the MUD era too.
were any games ever networked on the miggy? either over telephone lines or serial link?

A few games supported networking. Off the top of my head the Bullfrog stuff (Populous II I think) err actually that's all I remember! Others will have better info maybe... also a fair few had null modem play but not over modem

I think split screen was more common for multiplayer: Bloodwych, Masterblazer, etc

Its been chaos at work but just want to say hi and thank you to folks for posting here and on the thread i started on text adventures. Its been a great help and I have a group of 40+ students all playing retro and Amiga games. Cinemaware games and BASS are big hits
