Upgrading a 1200

Hope this is in the correct forum.
What are the options for upgrading memory on a 1200? I seem to need more than 2mb to run the WHDload games I would like to play.
I understand that a pcmcia SRAM upgrade is one option, and this is a fast ram increase? Just lost out on a 2mb card on fleabay which went for £41. They do seem to hard to come by and expensive.
I could get an accelerator for the trapdoor, there seem to be all sorts of types and specs. An accelerator has an onboard processor? Does this mean there are basic memory expansions for the trapdoor, much like on the 600? I havent seen one, I assume this would be cheaper? Not looking to have a high performance machine (to be honest I would love a 600 to do this due to the fact it was my amiga first time round, but it does seem the 1200 is easier to expand) just one that works the way I want it to.

Look out for some trap door ram between 4 and 8mb should cost you between £20-40 depending on demand. Not as many people are buying at the moment (Due to Xmas I imagine) and there is quite a lot of kit on ebay and these forum market places such as amibay.

Take advantage of the buyers market and get yourself a bargain!

If you get 8mb it may conflict with your PCMCIA slot do if you are using a CF card to transfer files you'd need to disable the memory or use 4mb if the card has a jumper setting (mine does)

Good Luck,

Steve.

I highly recommend the DKB 1202 as the best RAM card you can get for your A1200. It has an FPU, Battery backed clock, two SIMM sockets and takes up to 8MB of RAM. It's one of the only A1200 RAM cards that doesn't conflict with the PCMCIA port. It simply disables the second 4MB SIMM if a PCMCIA card is plugged in, or if you're running the small patch MagicMem in your Startup-Sequence, it will add an extra 1.5MB from the second SIMM, giving you the maximum RAM a plain A1200 can use with the PCMCIA slot full, 5.5MB.

I hope you can find one, they're perfect for WHDLoad (there's no need for an 030 if you have enough RAM), and it'll speed up Workbench and make your A1200 much nicer to use on the internet if you ever want to get a PCMCIA network card and play some Dynamite against us!

Thanks for your replies guys, I guess I'll just have to keep an eye out. Didn't realise a pcmcia SRAM would slow down the 1200, seems odd?

Although the SRAM is slower on the 1200, I found that it was great for WHDLoad games and it even allowed a few CD32 and AGA WHDLoad games to load and play OK. The SRAM price goes up and down, I paid £22 from the same seller, whoever paid £41must have been very desperate!

Anyhow I now use the SRAM on my 600 as I just bought an Amitek 1202 with 4MB for less than the card you mentioned and it seems to play all the games that I have tried no problem
