@Anti!

I didn't actually realise the title screen graphic was his. Cool.

On a related note, at work I have recently started a pixel art isometric cityscape for an upcoming publication. It's all done lo res, pixel by pixel. I'm having great fun getting back to how I started in graphics. It might be Photoshop, but sometimes it feels like the old Dpaint days (except my mouse now works properly).

I always through the cut-scene artist(s?) for Westwood studios were unappreciated.
The in game art could have jerky animation and be primitive, but the cut scenes had that crisp pixel plotted shine to them.

@s2325
Thanks!

Hm, I guess you are referring to the Kyrandia games? I don't know any other games where the animation can be described as jerky or primitive. Part 3 was already a whole lot better in that respect though

I have far more respect for older game graphics and design as the artists had to go that extra mile (and they tend to look far better than their 3D counterparts which look too clean cut and polished - ugh please add some real DETAIL)

HUGE respect. I've had to do some pixel work when doing hobby remake stuff and especially shading is a skill I will probably never be any good at. Of course I have the artistic capability of a wooden log to begin with, I can't draw inside the lines even today

Nah, earlier stuff like Eye of the beholder or dragon strike, two attack frames, 1/4 screen movement animations.. Dragon strike also had some nice "cutscene" graphics, but most of it was lifted from DnD sources.

The PlayStation is a great example of how 2D beats the crap out of 3D.

Just look at games like Lomax, Castlevania, Oddworld, Rayman etc.
All 2D games which still looks very very good unlike most of the 3D games which to be honest looks downright butt-ugly.

Hm yes, but most 3D RPGs were like that in the EOB days and even the years after it. Dungeon Master 2 and Stonekeep were the first 3D RPGs I can remember that really had some animation going on.

Also if you really examine free moving RPG games such as Ultima Underworld and Daggerfall, you'll find that they aren't much better in the animation department

Just checked in to say, who reads Iphone app reviews and don't take criticism from yoofs. They're lazy spoiled brats, just like most of us were when we were young.

And also, the demoscene is full of people who appreciate lovely hand-drawn graphics, we compete in it, and many of the artists are right showoffs!

So consider showing off there. Your talent will be greatly rewarded, not with money but with SoulCa$h (tm).

Back in the day though we never had the internet to vent our views. Most negative views about the Amiga were dealt with by flushing the heads of Atari ST users down the toilet

You say primitive, I say minimalist. I also disagree with the title. Check the number of purchases and the payment made here http://www.humblebundle.com/

The posts with the word primitive in them didn't refer to Simon the Sorcerer, and Simon the Sorcerer isn't in the HumbleBundle.

?

Also, you can only claim to have made minimalist something when that was your intent and it fulfils the criteria for minimalism. Lode runner, Asteroids has minimalist graphics, Mr Do's Castle, Blasteroids does not.

Me, I think that even if we're bound to get tired of playing old games on new platforms some day, keeping the graphical style / 'not updating the graphics for 2011' is the way to go, every time.

So you don't think they're peeved about the huge 'finger' Bloodwych? If it's in the game. I'd try a demo but I'm very not into adventure games.
