Would anyone be even remotely interested in a J-RPG game on Amiga?

As I really dig into ASM coding I should note - one of the main reasons I started this journey was to try and eventually make something along the lines of the Final Fantasy/Phantasy Star type console RPGs. Being a long-standing favorite genre of mine of course I'd want to throw my hat in the ring (hopefully conning a few talented friends to join the ride...)

As both the Genesis and Amiga have M68K cores it's not too hard to imagine porting from one to the other, as both systems are my favorites. However getting Genesis/MD folks into a new J-RPG is easy.

What about the Amiga folks though? Even as a late homebrew afterthought would anyone even be interested in this type of game? I hear a lot of slagging of the japanese style RPGs when I see talk of the great computer RPGs like Eye of the Beholder or Ambermoon... am I proposing something heretical or would it even have a chance?

Obviously not looking for monetary success - just 'people playing a freely distributed game' type of success.

I love both types (C and J ), so I would surely give it a try If you think along the lines of RPG-Maker that would be awesome Even if I won't join the coding fun, I would love to make some dungeons and quests.

Although RPGs are not really my thing someone wanting to code a new Amiga game should definitely be encouraged.

@AB Positive

Do you happen to know any graphic artists (or maybe you are one too)? If so could you possibly point 'em in my direction too? I'm not gonna hijack this thread but I need some artistic help for my own project...

You're in the absolutely right country *not* to like 'em Do they still camp outside the shops when a new Final Fantasy/Dragon Quest is released?

yeah ehehe maybe they do, I dunno I keep my distance from akihabara these days

dunno if it can be considered as a j-rpg, but I'ld be definitely interested in a amiga remake of princess maker. ok there you have it, let the gheyness unfold !

this should be definitately doable, game mechanics are very simple, just lots of nice graphixs work and some nice modules needed.

I love some J-RPGs, that is if Zelda fits the genre. I've played a few on the SNES and Mega Drive, and although I love the exploring, questing and in-depth stories of some of these games, I lose interest once I encounter an enemy and it switches to turn-based combat. I liked killing enemies with a sword, like in Zelda or Beyond Oasis. I've tried Final Fantasy XII but really didn't like it. Turn-based combat just bores me to tears (although I enjoy chess).

I've wanted to make a game like Beyond Oasis for the Amiga for many years. If you use the Copper to move your playfield around it should leave the Blitter free to move around quite a few decent sized BOBs, and use sprites for the Heads-Up Display stuff. OCS Amigas were built to do these things well, but never really had much of a chance to show it. It wouldn't be too hard to do up some graphics for a game like this pretty quickly provided you're okay with a cartoony/anime style. Multi-track MODs would be perfect for music that changes depending on the situation, like enemy encounters and victory jingles.

I think you'll find a few other Amiga users have been wanting to make a game like this in recent years, but no one has really started anything as far as I know.

I wonder if the guys making Pier Solar would be interested in an Amiga port. There's a game that already has a full story, characters, level maps, events and everything already planned out and nearly completed.

Yeah, there is something about that, Japenese Females in School Girl Uniforms

Could you code it like one of my favorites of all time, Bards Tale ????

I always liked that party goes out to kill and slay foozle type of thing....

I would consider Speris Legacy and Legends to be the closest we have got to a J-RPG, with Dragonstone, Darkmere and Wasted Dreams having similar gameplay but feeling much more European.

I'd love a new game like this.

Speris Legacy is more a J-Action Adventure, like Zelda. Final Fantasy is a good example of a traditional J-RPG: You have 4-x party members, turn-based/realtime fights, a complex story, tons of items and weapons.

But with drawn graphics in the typical Japanese anime style, mostly with pretty young kids as the game heroes.
