EAB/Lemon Super League 2009: Round 9 - All Terrain Racing

EAB/Lemon Super League 2009: Round 9 - All Terrain Racing

Starts: 00:01 September 13
Finishes: 23:59 October 3

Rules

Post screenshots of your scores in this thread, and write your score underneath. You can enter as many times as you like within the round's time frame.

Select Medium from the options and play Arcade Mode - starting with Canyon, Intermediate level (default selections). This competition is based on what score you achieve so you will need to take a picture of the high score table after you've played.

No cheating of any kind (including score leeching) - this includes save states. No continues/passwords allowed. If you suspect a contestant of cheating then don't post it in public (anyone who does so will have their posts edited or deleted) - please PM me, Biscuit or mihcael and we will investigate it. If we find anyone guilty of cheating then they will be banned for the entire season.

Please only post your score on either the EAB or Lemon forums. If you have already played this year you have to post your score on the same forum for the whole season. If you are new, the one you post on first will be your team for the whole season. However you are welcome to discuss the compo, game etc. on the other forum if you wish.

The winner of this round gets to choose the letter for round 11 - the third special round where you can only vote for games that begin with the specified letter. So a bit of extra incentive.

Remember, anyone can join in at any time. Have fun and feel free to ask any questions you may have.

Hurrah! One of my favourite games. I know all the tracks by heart and I hope to win this round, guys!

And here is what I managed to achieve today - I set my new personal best record score and I finished the game! Although I could have done better, so if someone beats me, I know what to do to improve the score

Don't think I'm going to beat mailman somehow

Still haven't won a race yet. Got to the first forest track, but not actually having the track marked out, combined with the slippy-slidey bits, don't make for much entertainment.

Handling is the clue to everything. You also need to read tips which are in the game (read the credits and wait). My advice - at the beginning expand engine and gears. Then armour and tyres. Tyres have to be upgraded in the Forest Level and Moon Level. In the rest of the levels they make you slower when taking curves. Bear in mind that after each level there is one gadget which is random. It is in the bottom left. Do not by turbo (activated by joy up) or steering wheel (especially in the Forest). Always buy suspension (if it is available) and brakes in the curvy levels (Space, Alien).

While driving, collect money. Green crystals decrease damage (damaged car is slower). Arrow up is sudden accelaration. Take it only when you know what you are doing.

Remember to decelerate releasing the fire button and take the bends gently. The car handles great and with some training you might learn how to tame this beast.

Even though it's written in bold in the first post it could easily be missed by someone...

So please set the difficulty to Medium before you start (it's inititially on Easy):

Awesome score.

Did you really use the buggy? (We must not use the 4x4-jeep...)

@all: Is there a way to practice the later levels without using savestates (because we're not allowed to use them)? It sucks that I always have to beat the canyon tracks before I can have another go at the forest track(s)...

Er... just select 'forest' instead of 'canyon' on the track select screen?

Unfortunately that doesn't work because you start with forest track #1 then.

But if you start with the canyon-levels (as we're supposed to) after them comes forest level #3 (that's the one I currently need to practice).

Of course I did and I set MEDIUM. I am just good at it. Besides, Jeep is slower and at the first levels it is very difficult to make laping bonus which gives you some extra money and extra score.

What is the difference between EASY and MEDIUM? EASY gives you the credits after you fail. MEDIUM does not.

Try battle mode. You can then practice with possibility to destroy your opponent. If you choose second player option you can treat it as a training.

This is the beauty of this game. If you do not know it, everytime you have different track, different race. If you start the game from CANYON you will have some levels in the FOREST and some in the SPORTS. But if you start from SPORTS, the levels in the FOREST and in the CANYON will be totally different.

Important is that you will have to go through three stages in each of the first three levels. Next will be SPACE level and here you will have four to race through. But they will be random.

Important is also that if you do not reach SPACE levels in the arcade mode you cannot choose them in the Battle Mode. The same goes for MOON and ALIEN which come next.

This game is difficult but if you learn how to play it, you will achieve great records and great scores. We chose to drive Buggy. I must admit that the greatest fun is when you drive Formula and choose HARD. This is FUN and huge challenge on Moon levels. Probably it would unbeatable for some of them even in the FOREST.

Anyone wants to see my lap records to compete? They have been set using FORMULA car although I still manage to beat some of them using BUGGY. Of course everything depends on the performance of your car. Sometimes it is better on one track and you can do well beating the time.

I am going to try.
I wouldn't mind seeing someones forest records, cause I suck at it and I want to know how much better I need to be. I did find driving with power steering so much easier in the forest, even though mailman suggested not to use it.

Importance of such information is not high because the game does not store information which car was used and with what improvements to achieve the record.

For example, if we play CANYON first, then the first track might be as well the third one if we start from FOREST. Then in the CANYON track our car is already pretty well improved.

Nevertheless, here are my best lap times.

One more tip. When you are in the pole position. Do not press fire until you see green. Otherwise you make a falstart and your start will be much slower than others. Sometimes it is very useful to obtain the advantage right at the beginning of the race.

Thanks Mailman for your tips

A question for Graham (the best fan of ATR):

Is it banned to take the one continuous available in medium difficulty?

Otherwise i have a feeling to be Luca Badoer at this game

I think the level designer stuck to just one rule: "DRIFT and you'll DIE"

Great game though.

I think I need mailman to drop by and give me some lessons

I think the trick with drifting is to not drift the whole way round a corner, unless you are good enough not to bump into something. I like to release accelerate, then start turning and accelerate shortly after turning, this lets you drift half way round the corner and you keep your speed up.

I wouldn't even bother trying on the forest levels.

In fact drift is the way to take the curves. You just need to learn how to steer the car during the drift. If you keep accelerating and push your stick to the right (or left), you will drift. But try during the drift releasing and pressing the fire button constantly and move the joystick to the starting position and again pushing towards direction (it is like waggling but slower and more gentle). Good practice levels for this are Sports. It is really easy but you need to learn how.

Yes, it is something like this! I can tell you, that if you learn it, you will be laughing how easy it was and how beatiful this game is.

Another great game from Team17, one of my favourite in this category. I'm relax in the canyon but need to train more in the forest ...

I noticed your image isn't showing. I copied and pasted the link in your post for the image and it works fine. What's up there? (For everyone else, he scored 65,700.) Also in any case can you please write the score in your post from now on, thanks!

EDIT: Okay you've fixed it, now I look stupid

100500.

I came second on all the sports tracks and it was the first time I had reached them.
I 'died' on the first space level, it is crazy, you need a bit of luck to do well on that track.

One of the greatest 2 player games ever.

Never really played it in 1 player though, wish I had the time to give it a go.
