Evil grin My idea...

Now I think that we're all pretty pissed off about that stalling situation and we need things to move and keep going to see our platform run again.

First thing to say. During the last days I abandoned Windows Systems to start working again with AmigaOS 3.1, the operating system I like to call "home".

Now the idea.

What we need:

A suitable low priced platform like the following:
- Intel Little Falls 2 + 1Gb RAM + 500Gb 2.5" HD + DVDRW + wireless adapter + Mini custom case
- Intel DG41MJ + any core duo cpu + 1 or 2Gb RAM + 500Gb 2.5" HD + DVDRW +wireless adapter + Mini custom case

Operating system port to x86:
I think power PC gotta go to f##k itself off our way. It has been a wrong choice and now we're paying the consequences. So get the rid of the overpriced, low performance board and let's get something more serious. Sorry for Acube by quite frankly, I want the Amiga life, not the Acube one.

Application port to new x86 operating system:
- Firefox
- Flash
- Multimedia Player
- Open Office Suite
- Burining DVD software and codecs

So what will be the strenght of the new Amiga family?

Easy: low price with coast variable between 300 and 800 euros for a complete system.

SO WHY ISN'T ANYBODY DOING SOMETHING TO SHAKE THAT SITUATION?

I wrote to McEwen about that and if he don't answer me I'll take the first plane to go to speak with him personally...

Damn, that situation is pretty frustrating for all of us.

No money to make? No interest?
Amiga Inc. doesn't care about it for sure. OS 4.1 and the SAM hardware show where the current development heads to. Natami... no comment on that. It'll end up with having an 'emulator' for classic Amiga software anyway, so honestly is there really a point?

Well, they aren't doing really well. I have no idea where they get their money from, but it's surely not from pushing something 'Amiga' forward.

Well, there is AROS, get coding if you want to see it happen.

But I dont see the point anyway if you just want to run the thoroughly mediocre software you listed. Apart from having the same guts as a x86 PC, now you`d be using the same software aswell? Whats the point..

IMHO the only chance to push an AmigaOS would be to make it run on PS3 or other popular consoles. Too bad none of them are (fully) open for or interested in an embedded full fledged OS.

I think it's safe to say that a lot of people on EAB are happily accepting that the Amiga is not going to come back, and are appreciating it for the great retro feel and nostalgia that it offers.

If it's an enthusiastic response you want to your idea, then post it on Amiga.org. It's full of people who are in denial about the Amiga, and who will happily spend 800 on hardware which can only be used to run a slightly-better-than-home-made OS for which there is no software or games.

Steve.

@lelezetec:
Your propositions are way too expensive. You get a decent PC with lots of software for that price. The way for a new Amiga is either a high end gaming console, or a low end mobile platform/netbook. Nothing beats PC these days, when you want the most bang for the buck.
EDIT: To set this straight: Amiga is not coming back. I meant an Amiga substitute.

All modern consoles run on PowerPC derivatives, btw. Many super computers run with PowerPC. There is nothing wrong about the platform. It is just that Intel has a monopoly in the desktop market.

I think with pervasive computing there is much space between Windows and Unix for a compact, easy and robust OS. (Oh, I like Linux and such, but I don't believe in "one size fits all".)

I wouldn't want Firefox on any Amiga, it runs like shit stuck in tar on this 1.7Ghz Linux PC. But if you want it for AmigaOS, as well as all that other boring Linux software, start porting to AROS. Hyperion have made it clear that they are NOT going to port AmigaOS to x86 (although I don't think they've specifically excluded x64). If you think PPC is dead in the water, then MorphOS and AmigaOS aren't going to offer you what you want any time soon.

AROS and Anubis on the other hand are making steady progress, and encourage developers to contribute directly towards bettering the OS and shaping it the way the USERS want, not some faceless head company. AROS already has a web browser capable of visiting and rendering most websites perfectly, it's called Origyn Web Browser and it's already got Flash support working in some builds, thanks to Gnash.

You can also buy a PC with AROS peinstalled and setup, it's called the iMica. You can order one here, and they're certainly cheaper and more powerful than a Sam - http://www.clusteruk.com/

@Cammy

Last I looked at the AROS project there was talk of an Inline-Amiga 68k emulator, do you know any more news on this?

Last I visited the forums they were discussing bounites for it, alas the need for working substitute kickrom took precidence as (rightly so) any emulation would rely on that too.

Yeah, what I've love for a modern day Amiga;

Don't want to be limited by hardware - my choice of components
A choice of OSs that can handle all these bits of hardware in any combination
Lightning-fast CPU
Some kind of blitter/copper replacement
Fast 3D acceleration
Virtually unlimited colours
Loads of RAM - 8 gig or so would be nice
Hardware accelerated sound (stoopid high quality of course with no limits on what can be produced)
Choice of cases
Massive harddrive(s) with the ability to run all software (inc games)
The ability to use modern LCD screens of any size + the resolution to match
CRT support for that old-school look (flicker)
DVD/Blueray support
Bluetooth
USB 2
Firewire
Wi-fi
And of course, the ability to run classic Amiga software.

Yep, I'd be in Amiga heaven then ...

(see what I did there? :P )

Actually, Windows is so shite, I'm also gonna go back to 3.1. Got me a wireless network card now and iBrowse. A much nicer experience all round I'm sure you'll agree.

(At least my joystick port polls faster now - 'tis very important that)
