Best fifth gen console ?

With this link I started a discussion about fifth gen consoles in Best Sega Saturn Games thread. In my opinion 5th gen consoles are the best retro gaming machines (due to massive growth of 3D games (which are not retro for me and doesnt matter when they were released) on Dreamcast, Xbox, GameCube, PS2) and the discussion there is interesting imo, lets move it here.

What console(s) are your favourite and why?

For me its Saturn, lots of superb games in retro style, shmups, sport games and many others.

You can vote for more than one console.

Good night

Was the dreamcast not a late 5th gen console?

damn a tough one... I voted saturn/psx/n64
I really cannot imagine one choise, all 3 have unique games!
if it was only one I would choose the psx , because of the ULTRA-VAST game library, easy to find and burn cd's, ultra-easy mod install, ultra easy to get one

PSX/PS1 without a doubt.
Everyone had it, it was available everywhere, there was tens of games at the start and thousands after a few years, it was a blessing for our dying Amigas and had a soul.

Using the the generation term to identify the time period a console came out is inaccurate anyway, so the Dreamcast could be in both really.

I voted both the Saturn and the Neo Geo because i could not decide between them!! They are both great for fighting games and both have a huge import scene

It has to be the PS1 for me... With the Original Toca and Colin McRae games as well as Tomb Raider I & II... still being some of my favourite games...

I enjoyed the N64 the most. Every N64 title I played I loved and they gave me hours of entertainment. Perhaps more than any system bar the Amiga. Banjo Kazooie, Banjo Tooie, Conkers Bad Fur day all amazing 3D platformers with killer stories and level design. Mario64, Zelda OOT & Majora's Mask, GoldenEye!! Paper Mario etc. etc.

There are one or two titles on the PSOne that did have me hooked (Wipeout, Medal of Honour & Underground, TombRaider) but the sheer high availability of titles and the hit-n-miss nature of the games never quite gave me the loving feelin the N64 had.

Never owned a Saturn at the time, got one free from work and never used it for a decade but came to love it for it's action RPG's. Not quite in the same league though.

The N64 was a great dissapointment for me. Good games like Occarina of Time came way too late. The PSX has a great game library of 3D/2D games, best allrounder console from 1995-2000.

I really enjoyed the N64. Mario 64 and Mario Kart 64 were really good games. Then came Zelda - Ocarina of Time and Banjo and Kazooie which were also really nice. Doom 64 were different, but yet a very entertainig version.

Saturn for me, in the right hands it was a capable 3D machine, its just that many programmers couldn't be bothered.

I liked the PS1, but if you look back on the machine, there was an awful lot of dross on it.

Oddly, most of the 2D stuff on Saturn has aged very well.

The saturn was a quite challenging beast to program.
The CD32 couldn't even compete with a SNES or a MegaCD

Sorry the CD32 could challenge both the SNES and MegaCD, in fact most versions on CD32 were superior to MegaCD versions.

Games could have been better on CD32 over SNES, but programmers just couldn't be bothered.
