Evil grin Shapeshifter help! (Again?)

Hello all, after upgrading my system, I've finally gotten
her to work smoothly. (Mostly by replacing the os3.9
setpatches romloading capabilities with those provided by
fblit, allowing for a few more bell, whistles, and fixes,
including the annoyin A1000jingle patch which I'm still
trying to figure out why I put up with :-D ) However, While
I've gotten shapeshifter to boot with a dedicated mac
partition formatted with crossmac, and figured out my
bigges prob was apparently the blizkick prepareemul module
needed to be before the fastmemcopy and speedychip stuff, I
still consistantly crash when loading the installation for
macOS 7.5.3 (along with many other programs) I've installed
MCP, and used its guru logger, the last entry from a
shapeshifter crash was #80408080, though the computer
simply reset instead of offering a guru. Basilisk seems to
do the same thing, though it lost its hard drive prefs, and
I can't remember how I translated shapeshifters first
sector, num. of sectors, max transfer size to basilisks
start block, size (blocks), and block size prefs. Also, the
nocopyback tooltype doesn't work, so I'm planning on using
MCP's when I get it up and running if needed, until then I
disable copyback with cachecontrol. Any ideas?

See if dissabling prepemul module helps. Functionality is in the OS39 exec.

Have you tried Fusion? Somewhere along my upgrade path, Shapeshifter stopped working for me, so I wnet to Fusion, which works really well - mostly.

Cool re:Shapeshifter help! (Again?)

Thanks for the advice! Haven't tried fusion at all, for
some reason I thought that was a hardware/software deal,
probably confused it with AMax or something similar. I'll
have to check it out. About prepemual, i'v tried disabling
it, and the program crashes before bootup. When I install
it via blizkick, it seems to work. I remember I didn't use
it when I ran shapeshifter under AGA, and now it doesn't
run without it. Probably not getting all the 3.9 rom
patches blizkicked over, I'll have to check that. Though
last night I remembered my wife had a basilisk II hardfile
with 7.5.5 on it, so I copied it to my fileserver, mounted
it over SMBFS (which was painfully slow), and copied the
system folder over to the 1200's MFS partition. Switched
the boot disk via control panels, and reset. Aside from
some missing aliases, 7.5.5 booted up perfectly, and is
much more stable than the 7.0.1 install that was on there.
My only gripe now is there seems to be some conflict hiding
somewhere, probably with blizkick. (I'll check version
numbers via scout later), and I'm stuck running it in its
own screen instead of a window. I'll check into fusion, and
see if I can remedy that. Oh, and the only copy of Diamonds
I had (cheesy mac game) was on a hardfile on my old HDD
that went bad. On a side note, anybody know how to get the
files copied into an MFS partition via CrossMac to work? I
end up with filename.sit.bin files that I can't access via
MacOS. (Trying to install taxicab as a browser)

Filename.sit.bin files require extracting with StuffIt Expander before Mac OS can gain access to the files transferred using CrossMAC.

However, if it is only the .bin extension which has been added by CrossMAC (because it has MacBinary encoded the transferred files), then are you saying that StuffIt Expander can't extract the files because the MicBinary archive is corrupt?

Re: Shapeshifter help! (Again?)

Yup. For some reason, crossmac adds the .bin whenever I copy something into the partition, and stuffit won't recognize it. I'm trying to avoid the mac-handler that came with shapeshifter, as crossmac seems to be a more elegant solution. (Even though I have to stuff my mac partition and 2 dos partitions in before the 4GB mark) I'll have to play with the crossmac commodity a bit more, I think...

I'm not impressed with CrossMAC at all. I certainly don't consider it an elegant solution in any way. I suppose it doesn't help that I've absolutely no instructions for using it. Do you have any documentation for this utility, like a User Guide or manual perhaps? That would make life a lot easier!

Edit: If the file you are transferring is a StuffIt archive already (with a .sit extension), then you could try copying it first to an AmigaDOS partition (which would separate the data and resource forks of the file), and then copying just the data fork (the one without the .rs extension) to the Mac partition. StuffIt Expander should be able to handle the archive without the resource fork, since archives of this type don't require a resource fork.

Actually, it came with an old 1200 I aquired. No documentation, I'm afraid. :-( There aren't too many options to play with, though. I can either copy to macbinary, the data fork, or the resource fork.

That's the biggest gripe I have with CrossMAC. I haven't been able to get anything in the way of documentation for it at all!

Try copying just the data fork for .sit archives. This will give you the same result as I spoke of in my edit above.

Hi watertonian,

Did that work for you?

I'm interested because I know so little about CrossMAC myself. It's got the potential to be a great utility for Mac enthusiasts with an Amiga, but it often disappoints due to problems like its unextractable MacBinary encoding.

BTW, which version of CrossMAC are you using?

re: Shapeshifter help! (Again?)

Yeah, though I found out that wasn't the problem. I was using an older version of stuffit that didn't like the .bin files. There still seems to be a problem with a couple other .bin files, but those seem to have gotten scrambled by transferring between the ram: disk and macos: disk with varying translation methods via the crossmac commodity. (Dumb move on my part, after realizing what I was doing, I turned the computer off and went to bed :-) ) I'll play with it a bit more tonight, though. Apparently icab doesn't like to run without some sort of 68k extension installed?

If it gets to the point where frustration sets in, definitely give Fusion a go. You're right it was that other thing that needed hardware, not Fusion. As I recall, if one used a custom hard drive format (from Aminet) and used a disk file, it was actually quicker than using a dedicated hard drive partiton.

Having said all that, I think the last time I tried, I got Shapeshifter running but not Fusion. :-/

Didn't want to start a new thread
I picked up MicroSoft Office V4.2.1 CD-Rom Cheap - I cant get ShapeShifter to read the CD under Mac OS System 7.5.5 -The CD is HFS standard format.
HFS Plus CDs have worked but not HFS Standard?
Tried coping all the files to a joliet CD but of-course the files lost all there Properties/Data/Forks...
Any Ideas or plugins for System 7.

Edit:Installed using basilisk II - ShapeShifter and Basilisk II Harddrive files are compatible
Office running quite good on A1200/030/32mb
