I mean their low resolution is more adapted to small screens than giant lcd ones.

I will also back this up re: TR games.

Although the only time i really play PS1 games is on the PSP. Resident Evil games still hold up well imho, because of the great gameplay... but i'm never too bothered about amazing graphics anyway.

i second that, the Resident Evil series had me hooked for many, many hours on that platform...this also continued onto the Dreamcast.

Lets face it, all of us would sooner sit down with a few Amiga games rather than PSX games, thats why we are here, but the rationale for this thread is totally swung by rose tinted Amiga branded spectacles.

The only things that have aged worse than the Amiga is stuff made by Atari.
er, no its not!

I started this thread because a lot of PS1 vector based games look like crap.

I'm not suggesting that 3D stuff on Amiga was anything fancy, but the PS1 is very blocky when it comes to 3D, not something that was prevalent on Amiga.

Sorry, but when I look at stuff like Brian the Lion, its nice and smooth, belies its colour limitations and still looks great today...... alas Cool Boarders 2 does not in anyway shape or form look good. Even the intermission screens seem to be a crappy lowres.

Gally, I agree that the 3D games on PSX have aged horrifically.
But I think the sprite based ones are quite beautiful, most of them.
Same is true for the Saturn and 3DO.

not strictly true there chap,

FFVII and FFVIII have issues saving the game on a PS2 and can often corrupt a memory card in the process.

Ps2 could actualy play Ps1 games by hardware, unlike the the Ps3 which had to play the Ps2 games by emulation, only then it was one certain model which did that if i recall.

It's my main reason for not buying the Ps3, no backward compatibility whereas the ps2 was excellent in playing Ps1 games.

All I can remember is people bashing the Saturn for its 3D capabilities but me finding the PSX was actually not that much nicer!

The 3D is so blocky it hurts.
I only played 3 games for my PSX: FFIX, R-Type Delta and Einhander.
Actual;ly I will rip them now and play them on my PSP

Didn't know that. Never ever experienced such a thing here.

No problem here. I still think that FF IX is the best game in the PSX trilogy.

The Saturn was far better with the SHMUPS

You should try Tactics Ogre. It was released on the SNES and GBA, but was best on the PSX. Fantastic FF Tactics style game, but better.

I will agree most PS1 games did not age very well.

But some did. Final Fantasy 9, Crash Bandicoot, Chrono Cross, CastleVania, Oddworld games, all still look great and colorful today.

Name one game on the Amiga A500 that has aged well. There are some good games, but fuck me they all look like they were made a couple of decades ago.
You can take the graphics from the Amiga and improve them but you can't take the gameplay from it (which is far more important and keeps me coming back).

Take Cannon Fodder for instance, that can still draw me in like it did almost 15 years ago (is it THAT old now, b0llocks, now I feel old).

A lot of the old demoscene stuff from the early 90's still looks as good... take Desert Dream for example. The X-Plop 360 has nothing on that Coders and the like these days have it easy with fast GPU/CPU's and storage capacity. To make a demo like that back then is/was incredible and took real skill$or$.

It was swings and roundabouts.

Saturn had no (easy to use?) alpha blending, so it was faked by using granulated transparent shading (which didn't look very good).

However if programmed correctly, Saturn could do perspective correct texture mapping, i.e. no wiggling textures as you move, a highly visible artefact present in all PSOne 3D titles.

If you "add" perspective correct texture mapping to a PSOne (an option present in many emulators) the 3D don't look too bad IMO

Saturn was a great machine, problem for it was Sega concentrated more on its 2D capabilities than 3D.

When it came to 2D stuff, the Saturn wiped the floor with the PS1, but of course, 3D stuff was the 'new' thing back then.

Too bad it was poorly implemented on the PSX, forcing developers to basically do their own 3D subroutines. At least that is what I gathered from my limited investigations into the subject.

Saturns libraries were not much better either.

quite a few developers rewrote them to be a lot quicker, Slipstream 5000 was a case in point.
