Playstation - Jesus, what a load of crap!

Was bored today, so I was reading the manual that comes with the Playstation 3 and I knew I wasn't able to load and play Playstation 2 stuff, but didn't realise I could play Playstation 1 stuff.

So, dug out some old PS1 titles to load on the PS3, and most of them worked..... rather wished they hadn't!

I honestly don't remember PS1 stuff looking and playing like absolute shit!

Anything vector related was just so absolutely awful to look at, I really can't believe just how badly PS1 has aged.

I have to say, a lot of Amiga stuff has aged far better than PS1. I remember PS1 being a real kick ass machine, but it just looks HOPELESS now.

Must get some stronger rose tinted glasses next time.

It's true a LOT of PS1 games have aged horribly. Some still look acceptable though. I played Tekken 3 recently and thought that still looked alright. Einhander too.

I agree; old 3D vs new 3D means that the PS1 just looks rubbish - but there are some great games still like Micro-Machines that have aged ok.

That's why I play old PS1 games on a PC emulator - with updated rendering options that increase resolution or add filters that make them look a lot better!

I agree 100%.
The only PlayStation games that still holds up is the 2D games such as Castlevania - Symphony of the Night (which probably is the best 2D action/platformer ever made).

Exactly what I do - I gave my PS1 away years ago but still play my old fav's under ePSXe on a decent GFX card with every quality-improving filter I can find...
...actually I tend to use 'cartoony' filters as this seems to work well with games like Crash Bandicoot & gives games like GT2 a sort-of trendy cell-animated effect.

My lad was playing Ridge Racer on his DS, so I told him I had the very first version on the PS1 somewhere.

I wish I hadn't.

Showing on a 40" screen looked terrible and therefore unplayable.
He said 'The Playstation is rubbish'

The old games look ok on a portable but not much else these days.

Yep Magno, modern displays are not kind to older gaming hardware.

Tsk tsk, you're just playing the wrong games. Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy series, Gran Turismo, Need For Speed 3 and 4, Tekken 3, Vagrant Story, Chrono Cross, Grand Theft Auto 1 and 2, Driver etc. These all still look great. It's obvious that the Amiga games have aged better graphically in some cases, but then the Amiga didn't use first generation 2D either.

Never use lcd screen for old games, I know that and I have only crt monitors and TVs. PSX and CD32 games on my 14'' Funai TV looks really good.

You can still buy very cheap 72 cm (or 55cm - 21" cm) crt televisions.

I was also quite shocked when I tried ePSXe after haven't played any PSX game for about 8 or 9 years. I thought it was the emulator, but after I borrowed a real one, I knew it wasn't the emulators fault Still games like Final Fantasy 7 and Crash Bandicoot are okay even today, but most of the games deserve proper remakes.

There are enough PSX games that look good enough, even today. I wouldn't play them on a 32" oder bigger LCD/Plasma. Use a 55-70cm CRT TV and a lot of them are fine. I hate the most ePSX filters. Only pure 3D games like Spyro the Dragon profits from that.

I bought a modded PSOne last year for a few bucks. They released so many classics. Don't forget the perfect arcade ports of Strider, R-type, Gradius, Salamander, Parodius Deluxe packs or the fine J-RPG's/strategy games.

My sentiments exactly! I still have TR1-5 for the PlayStation. They are just as good as other versions for the Saturn, PC and Dreamcast, IMO.

I have tombraider 2 for the pc and the graphics looked worse on that than they did the psx...even with the 3dfx patch and the voodoo2 was an excellent card back then.

Well the Dreamcast was my last console. I was never interested in the PS2 or X-Box. And yes, the PSX was cheap enough.

That reminds me of another thing I like about PlayStation, or any console, games over PC versions, and that's the fact that you don't have to worry about system requirements like processor and speed, graphics card and memory or patches. They just run straight out of the box on a standard console with a memory card for savegames.

I dont think the PS 1 developers considered or even knew that we would all possibly be using large plasma/LCD screens...it's still an amazing little beast for a 33mhz processor and 2mb of ram.
