Oh blimey Charlie, you're not having much luck! Just unplug everything and grab a beer or 5. And have a virtual hug from me . In a manly way, not Foppish way.

But, at the risk of being flamed, I'll have to admit you've lost me, Charlie. What's a NAS?

Yep, time for a cuddle...

NAS = Network Attached Storage (ethernet HDD)

Let us survey the damage so far:
-Home server - Toast.
(Software, Qube backup, backup FTP server, Family photos + videos)
-Qube - Melted.
(FTP, Web, Radio servers)
-NAS - Dead.
(Movies, MP3's, Family photos + videos)

:SIGH:

The good news?
-All the retro boxes keep plodding on...

-Still awaiting Hong Kong on that replacement PCB.
(Not yet without hope on the Qube front)
-Looks like the NAS's PCB went fut rather than the HDD.
(currently 'acquiring' UFS Explorer for that one)
-I could well be about to become the EAB's resident file-recovery expert.
(I'd rather not have to learn TBH)

Anyway, enough moaning.

Nooooooooo! How typical of me, discovering this server just as it's down! *tch*

A Google cache of one of its pages revealed a little file called "The Last Ninja (2005)(Superior Software-ProAction).zip". Anyone care to Zone this or whatever?

Hello all:

The Saga continues:
-NAS HDD is a dead as a dodo, but non-the-less I've managed to recover most of my data!
I did say I'd at least get to learn a bit about data recovery...
-Finally the replacement PCB for the Qube RiscOS Server's HDD has arrived from Hong Kong this am...
...please pray!
-Of course my own server is utter toast but, hey, I guess things are improving...
...oh, yeh. My meter keeps tripping out so I wonder if I've got some dodgy electrics in the house that have caused all of this...

...ho, hum.

Charlie, I was going to suggest getting your electrics checked out as there's too many things here that just shouldn't have happened! As much use as they are, do get a surge protector as a start-a shop I worked in sold em at cost because they really did cut dramatically the number of amiga psus we got returned...

Good luck with the repair, but do get the electrics checked properly!

Hey, good initiative

I have a bunch of disks for my Archimedes A3000 (and a Risc PC). Also, I've hated how I had to go looking in 5-6 places to find info and stuff, usually very inactive sites or generally about other stuff than preserving oldskool stuff. So I'd like a be a member too.

May I suggest a shoutbox or one-liner javascript thingy on the front page? To alleviate the risk of the forum becoming less active than expected, as on the mentioned sites. Or an IRC webclient.

Maybe you have that already? Couldn't check out the site, it "loaded forever" so I never saw it.

And Charlie, USB -> PS2 will work with any PS2 to <any platform mouse port> adapter. No magic in there

Hurrah!

I have battled the evil one...

...and prevailed!

I have resurrected the Server's HDD...
...copied it to another drive for backup.

I've tested the Qube's mobo + PSU and they work...
...now to get it up again!

Piccies to follow...

When is it on-line again?
The clue is in the Sig.

@Photon:
You're very welcome to a membership (as are any others here) just pm me.
Good suggestions BTW, have a browse about the site when it's back up & see what you think.

Um, one last thought:

Hey, that's great news, Charlie!

Did the board from Hong Kong do the trick?

My thanks to you both.

Yes, the new PCB did the trick - phew!
After I had a rather hairy 'God, the drive really is dead' moment - then I noticed the new PCB had a label stuck over the contacts between it & the mechanism.
Needless to say I took an image of the drive, then copied it onto another HDD for the server AND have locked the original away in a box - me, paranoid? No...

So, it's up again in all it's, um, glory..?
Well, the Radio server's still down - did I mention my dead NAS..? Got the files back, though.

Piccies:

The Qube

Pre-Meltdown

The Qube

This Evening
(It works, ok)

No, it wasn't my beloved RiscPC that did a towering inferno impression; so melting my Qube. The first Piccie was taken about an hour before I moved it on-top of my 'evil' home-server.

Hi Charlie,

I'm glad you've got everything back up again, mate!

BTW, that RiscPC looks a bit of a monster!

Thanks for the Quick Tour!

Goodnight, mate! Get some rest, you deserve it.

Thanks guys

Um, slight hiccup - computer room's a bit of a mess ATM...
...I, er, accidentally kicked the power supply connector out the back of the (deconstructed) Qube - all's well now.

@mfletcher:
Yes, it's a bit of an upgraded one...
...I have another rather rare RPC too.

@prowler:
thanks, yes everything should be fine.

D*mn, past midnight. I'm going to turn into a pumpkin...

Oooooh, didn't take long for you and your server to return! Top stuff.

BTW, if you're after any more particular games, this place seems to sell quite a few spare copies, including Heimdall, Empire Soccer etc.

It's possible to get ZoolSpin - a little program emulating the game's protection codewheel - from here (with thanks to Archive.org for preserving the old Archie Game Emulation Webpage).

Thanks, I'll add it to the Zool archive on the server.

Maybe scanning the Zool box should be next on my to-do list.

No problemo. Glad to be of help!

You know, a scan of the two pieces of codewheel was also archived, but if you have the original game I'm sure you can provide a better scan..... unless you're afraid of taking the thing apart.

What's annoying though is that Heimdall on that site is one of the games Archive *didn't* save! And I've been struggling to find a download of that anywhere on the net. I'm telling you, I'm happy you decided to make this server (and I did read the Welcome page). If a bunch of others were just going to sit with their fingers up their arses while spouting about never supporting "piracy" in the Archie scene (while somehow believing it to be okay to pay well over the odds in this day and age for obscure Archie ports of 10-20yr-old games), somebody had to go do the proper thing in the end.

You know, one of these days I'll get round to uploading my CD copy of Simon The Sorcerer (which I believe cost me roughly 34 a couple years ago! And I can't even seem to find the site I bought it from anymore), seeing as no-one else on the internet, or even torrent world, has touched it with a lengthy barge pole.
