Smile Amiga Expansion

Hi Everyone,
Anyone know where I can find a decent GFX card and HD for my amiga? as I wanted a decent GFX card for it but they were like £400 (this was about 5 years ago).
Also my Hitachi 540mb HD sort of self combusted from neglect.

I found a 2.5 to 3.5 converter for amiga HD's in a shop, do you think this would let me shove any normal PC HD into my amiga? (as long as the drive isnt too big).

BTW My Amiga is a 1200 in a PowerTower,
SCSI Squirrel with 4x CD-Rom,
040 Accelerator with 8mb FastRam
and KS 3.0
Dead Hard Drive

(did it all when I was 10, quite chuffed, worked my way from 500+ to a 600 to a 1200 then added all this).

Also, where would the GFX card go if the expansion alot is already taken up by the accelorator?

Thanks

You can use any IDE Hard Drive with that Power Tower I have no experience with a SCSI HD though. I have a Blizzard BVision GFX card that is connected on the Bvision slot of my PPC accelerator. The accelerator itself is connected to the expansion port..

Hi NightShade!

Alternative info: my A1200 has a Mediator busboard, which is, to my knowledge, one of 3 PCI solutions for Amiga. Mediator is built by Elbox, so it was designed to fit the Power Tower perfectly. This (fairly) recent development opens up the wild wild world of PCI cards to the Amiga. As long as a driver exists, the card works. So far we've got GFX, sound and TV tuner card support.

I therefore use a Voodoo3, with Picasso96. Cheap, and better than any Amiga-native card. Also leaves the expansion slot free!

I believe Voodoo4 & 5 are now supported, and other GFX cards will be soon. Drool.

As for the HD, I personally recommend IDE. Hogs more CPU than SCSI, but so much cheaper...

Big grin

hm.. I mean that my CD rom drive is SCSI, the HD is IDE.

I didnt mean that the drive wouldnt fit in the tower ( : ) I mean that would the amiga recognise it? like old PC's have problems with big drives etc.

I thought Picasso96 was a GFX card? or is it just a driver for GFX cards?

and still need to find stuff for cheap............

This thread may help you about your HD question:

http://www.abime.net/eab/showthread....ght=filesystem

I'm currently using a 20GB HD and it works fine (apart from possibly accelerator related problems I posted on another thread) I formatted it under OS 3.9 with no problems.

Picasso96 is a Software Driver to work with most Amiga gfx cards out there

lol dude! Nah, I know you know how a drive might fit in a tower. I was merely extolling the virtues of a PCI solution for your gfx card needs. The Amiga-specific (i.e. non-PC market) cards ain't getting any newer, so it's PCI all the way, IMO.

Although, for the right price, the combination of BlizzardPPC + BlizzardVision gfx card is not at all bad...see Burseg's thread: http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?threadid=4298

That will handle all but the latest, greatest Amiga stuff.

Well, there's AmiBench, an Amiga buy/sell site: http://www.amibench.org/

There's the Marketplace on EAB itself...

And there's always EBay...

Thumbs up Hi Again

Hey retroman only joking i was amazed to see you asking for help when you came across as a bit of a know it all for a 10 year old and upwards but hey never mind. The only difference i can see that has changed regarding the amiga since the 80's is it seems to have started back up again cos poeple are getting bored with pc's and want something more to get there teeth in to like matching the amiga up against a pc for games and the net etc..I am a lot older than you and when amigas were the computer to have in it's days opposed to the atari st everything was so expensive and upgrading was not a big thing like it is today with pc's and now the amiga.I have got back in to amiga now and can afford all those goodies that have been around since the amiga days so nothing seems to be any different today as they were back then. The only difference today is the competition with pc's! and all those lovely adf's for free.

Anyway i hope we can still be good friends and i hope i can ask you for help when ever i get stuck???
