Nooo...! My proxy ate up my post.

Anyways, what I was gonna' say where something like this:

Most of my fav's are already up there. Including Yoshi's Island that I was going to mention. Super Metroid is the king of all games, quite possibly the best ever. ( sorry fellow Turrican-fans, but Samus is simply unbeatable when she dons her Varia-suit)

Oddly enough, I kind of rank Metroid as more of an Adventure-game, and less like a platformer, so I'd probably say as a pure platformer, Donkey Kong Country probably takes the title.

Super Back to the Future II. Surprisingly a decent platformer in cartoon style inspired by the movie (or the cartoon show). Controls could be better but the catchy main theme rocks.

Cybernator

Awesome mech game with great graphics and a great sense of "weight". The final cutscene was removed from non-Japanese releases of the game.

Donkey Kong Country

Great graphics, controls, soundtrack, and level design, along with a host of minigames. A bit unimaginative, but superbly excecuted and very fun.

Earthworm Jim 2

The first one was better on the Genesis (the SNES's low resolution reduced the field of view, making its version of the game less fun), but this one is best on the SNES. I'd say that there are more minigames than there are proper levels!

Front Mission: Gun Hazard

Produced by Square, a company better-known for its RPGs. It's a mech game in the vein of Cybernator, but it's even better than that one. There's a lot more strategy, and the graphics are mind-blowing.

The Lost Vikings

There are a billion versions of this game, but the SNES has the original. It revolves around teamwork-based puzzles, and it's designed beautifully.

Metal Warriors

Yet another mech game! It's very, very similar to Cybernator, but with the awesome addition of the ability to exit your mech and steal a different one. There's also a lot more action, and the level designs are great. There's even a deathmatch mode!

Super Mario World

Actually, I don't really like this game very much.

Super Metroid

Ah, that's better! This game is the pinnacle of the Metroid series, and consequently of games that involve exploring caves while shooting stuff. Everybody needs to play this game at least once.

Umihara Kawase

A game about a girl who climbs around by using her fishing pole as a grappling hook. It's pretty fun, in its own physics-y way.

For me its got to be Super Mario World, the game just flows so well and the controls are spot on.

Super Metroid is the greatest game ever made, IMHO. Awesome GFX art direction aside, the music was INCREDIBLE, nearly on par with Turrican 2. ;-)

Dunno why gamers say SNES can't scroll fast... Samus picks up some serious pace.

Donkey Kong Country, Earthworm Jim = very fun, great character animations, but there's a sense of hollowness once you were over the presentation.

Some level design in DKC was simply unfair. Remember the mine cart rollercoaster? Trial and error, no improvising.

Cybernator is awful, IMO. Those interrupting dialogue boxes that popped up... three words per line. And the controls = steep learning curve. :-(

+1
Shame they absolutely had to make the new games in 3D.

I played the Megaman series on NES, I think it was Megaman 3(?) that pissed me off so bad that I vowed I'd never touch the crap again. I may have also jumped up and down on the cartridge, I don't recall.

But yes, SNES was definitely the golden console for platformers before or since. I have a vivid memory of playing Star Wars on it and finishing it in one go while my big brother fed me a new brand of crisps that had just come out, "Hjärtan".

And it's both strange and not strange about those slowdowns. But I guess there was simply something in the hardware that couldn't quite cope with fast scrolling, my guess is the CPU, and / or sloppy programming!!

Super Metroid is one of the best games on any platform ever. It has challenge, atmosphere, great controls, great music and colour. It makes most other platformers look weak.

You silly swedes, you guys always seem to have horrible/bizarre tastes in game :P How can someone hate Megaman 3!? The series was near perfect on the NES. It was OK on the SNES, but more generic feeling.

MegaMan - the most overrated video game in the entire world IMHO.

Fun for 30 seconds lol.

Agreed. All games looks like the same, a milked to death Capcom series. There are far better platformer/run'n gun games.

Yeah, and IMNSHO it makes all other GAMES seem weak by comparison; it cannot be over rated.

But back to platformers (although Super Metroid is not strictly a platformer; but rather in a class of which only IT belongs), I'm struggling to think of ANY platformer that even comes close to it, on ANY system for sheer "legendariness".

Super Mario World is a genuine contender, as is Castlevania: SOTN.

Other games like Gunstar Heroes, Mega Man and Metal Slug are simplistic in concept compared to the afore mentioned three.

Do you mean Jungle Book? Jungle Hunt was an early 80s arcade game.
