I liked the two Castlevania for PS2 and Haunted Castle coin-op. Really I did not like too much 2D Castelvania as they are too much "platform" for me...

EDIT: I am also very sad as Castlevania for Dreamcast was not released

All the 3D Castlevanias is IMHO just "bleeeeeeeeeh".
Especially the N64 games and Curse of Darkness.
I too never bothered to finish Lament of Innocence.
Konami should stop that 3D nonsense on consoles and go for 2D like they did on handhelds like the DS & GBA.
More SOTN style please.

the ps2 games are somewhat OK, but have nonsense like "blood skeletons" that need to be killed but u need to know that BEFORE so you can make it happen... bleh
I *think* I have finished LOI... COD I just abandonned at some point because it was boring IIRC
I agree, a SOTN style 'vania is really needed!

Word!

My list

1. Symphony of the Night
2. Dracula X
3. Dawn of Sorrow
4. Castlevania III
5. Castlevania Chronicles

And the rest? I've played them, they were at most average. The GBA versions are cheesy SOTN clones, boring.

That might be true, but they're still a helluva lot better than any 3D Castlevania.

I notice that you carefully avoided to mention Castlevania Amiga

Be sure to check Castlevania I, II & III on the NES, they're excellent too.

Did anyone mention SoTN yet? What a masterpiece that game was. I couldn't believe it when I found out that all the tracks were composed by one and the same person! Talk about mastering many genres.

Castlevania I is a given favorite too. Simon's Quest is the odd one out in the series but I enjoyed that one a lot, much thanks to the music.

Castlevania dawn of sorrow is a good game. It has a mix of good art and bad art though. The indoor tiles (like where you see ouija tables) are really great. The julius Belmont running sprite looks especially terrible!
