KGLoad (Amiga Games Frontend) Beta Download Thread

Hi folks,

anyone who is genuinely interested in helping me beta test my frontend can you please download KGLoad from the links below and give it a test!

I would appreciate a wide variety of specs so I can get a better idea of how well it's working.

Someone who is likely to test this on a CD32/stock A1200 would be very helpful as well.

AGA Version:

OCS Version:

Current Beta Download is available here:

http://kgwhd.whdownload.com/kgload/KGLoad_Boot.zip (For direct-boot such as CD/HDD)
http://kgwhd.whdownload.com/kgload/KGLoad_Install.zip (For use from within Workbench)

You'll need to replace the file 'kg' in the above zip archives with the one available here:
http://eab.abime.net/attachment.php?...6&d=1228929442

Current requirements:

Chipset: OCS and AGA versions exist.
Kickstart: 3.0+ (For now)
RAM: 1MB?

Controls:

Joystick:
Fire1: Select Menu Item / Select Button
Fire2: Back
Up/Down: Scroll
Left/Right: Select Buttons/Menu

CD32:
Red: Select Menu Item / Select Button
Blue: Back
Play: Back to Main (Exit Menu if already in Main)
Up/Down: Scroll
Left/Right: Select Buttons/Menu

Keyboard:
Return: Select Menu Item / Select Button
Backspace: Back
Esc: Back to Main (Exit Menu if already in Main)
Up/Down Arrow Keys: Scroll
Left/Right Arrow Keys: Select Buttons/Menu
F1: Button 1
F2: Button 2
F3: Button 3
F4: Button 4

Future Ideas:

Favourites.
Launch random game.
Icon tooltype editing.
Load non-whdload games.
Display of ReadMe/Doc files.
Search filter (move to game).

Amiga 1200
Apollo 1230 Turbo Lite 68030/33 Mhz, 68882/33
8MB Fast RAM
ClassicWB

Although I have downloaded all your packs, I haven't got them all installed as I only have a 2GB flash drive.
Hopefully one day someone will do a large HD guide in the wiki
I only install what games I want. Will it make a difference?

although, tbh, i was just gonna let it boot first before loading WB!

1) left / right mouse button 'quick CLI' or 'basic WB' loading
2) cd32 'emulation' booting from CD0:
3) KGload
4) on exit of KGload , boot WB

that's how i plan to use it anyway

I am so lazy, that both my csppc A4000's are under "heatsink/fan" upgrades for the past 3 months... so I can't test , and I force Anemos to test extensively KG-Load. that will teach him

Wow, quite a few of you then! Cheers everyone.

That's made me feel all happy and stuff. (nothing sexual)

The beta will come as a standard zip package with all the necessary files inside. It'll come with both an icon to start it from and a startup sequence should you want to boot it on it's own (which I hope some of you do because I need this testing!).

I'll whack together a small text file with instructions on the very few adjustments you'll need to make to your system (libs, editing whdload.prefs etc.).

It'll come with the complete database, but you'll need to make sure you unpack the games (the ones from my packs, nothing else is supported) to whatever gamePath(s) you specify.

Some good ideas!

My idea for the default installs is integrating the launcher using a RAD: boot system. Hold the left mouse button on boot and select KGLoad (EDITED - WRONG NAME LOL) from the requester. Everytime you reset your Amiga after the initial load, it boots straight back into the KG Launcher as RAD: survives soft booting, leaving maximum resources free.

The newer bootmenus can be seen here:

http://classicwb.abime.net/classicweb/multiboot.htm

I'll also add it to the Workbench menus. Obviously KG might want a say in how it's presented also.

The new Menu systems look superb, Can't wait to see the updates.
Thank you for your ongoing support & hard work.

Apart from my 2xA1200 with 030 & 040 upgrades.
I've also got a stock A1200 with HD which I would be very happy to test your new Launcher with.

Nope, not on holiday, just very busy with a new project at work, plus DIY on my house which we're trying to get done before xmas, and my new band has its first gig in 3 weeks which is involving a lot of practice (we've been together as a band for 2 weeks).

I did a bit more work on Monday night which means it's soooo close to having a beta ready, just not sure when I'll get a chance to wrap it up and release it. I have band tonight and tomorrow, then going to watch a gig on friday night... maybe sat/sun but we'll have to see.

Sorry guys! Oh and thanks again for stepping forward, I do appreciate it.

Right...

I've finished the beta.

I need to throw a screenshot pack together, and zip the lot up but that shouldn't take long. If anyone is about to test it at the weekend that'd be fantastic as I have some spare time this weekend and can deal with any questions/problems that this throws up.

I should also have a lot more free time starting next week so would really like a v1.0 out for xmas. Any help is much appreciated.

It is by no means finished, I'm just happy enough to share it at last!

I'll try to upload it tonight/tomorrow night.

Right, the beta is DEFINITELY available starting tonight. Got a free night ahead of me and this missus is out with her mates so it gives me the time to upload it somewhere.

There is currently one known "bug" which I will leave in for now. It's to do with the order in which dirs/files are displayed in the menu (they seem to reshuffle), but this will be solved once I finish the favourites list as I'll need to implement a sort method which will cover both tasks.

Right, here are the links to the beta versions.

Remember, these are beta so anything they do to your computer is not my fault

Also, because they are beta, the games listed in the genre/year categories are not in any way related to the genre/year. They are just there for testing purposes.

There is also only one screenshot/boxart pic included. This beta is more to get a feel of how the menu controls. It will load games but you'll have to add them yourself. The only game included is Ruff N Tumble and it's the only game listed in the Favourites list.

EDIT: Links in first post

You may receive errors when trying to run it from a CD32 because a cd is read only (this will be fixed).

In fact you may get errors anyway I'd appreciate any feedback at all.
I've currently no idea how much RAM it needs, it booted fine with 1MB Chip (0 other mem) in WinUAE but I didn't play about with it much after that.
