@ OdddOd:
Thanks for the links! :-)

"To the best of my knowledge no program can extract individual files from FMS archives, not even the Amiga version of DMS"

Are you sure? I knew that a .dms archive can be disk-oriented (containing the image of an entire floppy) *or* file-oriented (containing one or more single files). In the second case it seems strange to me that it's not possible to extract one single file out of many...
For example, with .zip or .rar files (file-oriented compressors) I can extract single files...

No I'm not 100% sure which is why I qualified my answer with the phrase "to the best of my knowledge".

In fact a DMS/FMS archive does not have to be one or the other it is quite possible to create a hybrid archive that contains both tracks and files, how this is useful I simply don't know.

I agree it is a stupid restriction but almost nobody used FMS archives so it doesn't matter very much. It would be relatively simple to add support for this feature because DMS stores files the same way it stores tracks. Every file entry consists of two "tracks" the first is numbered 999 and contains the file header, comment and protection bits followed by track 1000 which contains the file's data.

In the case of solid RAR archives (also 7Zip solid and compressed tars) that is not technically correct, the decompressor actually unpacks the entire archive but only writes the file you selected to disk.
