Solved!
A windows program called "7-ZIP" did the job.

I see some code in the 7Zip sources to handle LZX format but always assumed that it was only used for CAB unpacking. A quick test on some LZX archives just produces the same old failures.

How did you get this to work?

Maybe only a special version of LXZ is supported. Tested it and also wasn't able to extract an archive with 7Zip LZX isn't listed as a valid file extension in 7Zip...

These are most probably archives that have been split (but not by LZX!). Just try to join them to one big lzx archive. Try this in a shell:
Code:
join OS-Version3.5.lzx.01 OS-Version3.5.lzx.02 OS-Version3.5.lzx.03 OS-Version3.5.lzx.04 OS-Version3.5.lzx.05 OS-Version3.5.lzx.06 OS-Version3.5.lzx.07 to OS-Version3.5.lzx
and see if you can extract the OS-Version3.5.lzx archive then.

I read that after posting. It's still worth to try the "join 'em all" approach as I'm almost sure it will work.

That's exactly what I was thinking but none of the Windows splitters / joiners such as HJSplt add the extension .01. It's usually .001 or something else... As you've mentioned, joining the files first using some method would be the way to go though.

I'm also a bit confused about how 7zip managed to do this

I tested extracting some .LZX archives using UnLZX2 in DOS and it worked fine. Apparently you could also use Total Commander + the LZX plugin to do the job on a Windows PC

I use W95unlzx. Works like a charm in Windows. However I would suggest using WinUAE and extract the files there, because of the file attribute and name problems that might occur.
