Arrow Status of Voyages of Discovery

Hi,

I know you have been missing my very peculiar requests .

It seems to me that the whdload of the Civ-like "Voyages of Discovery" (1995, Black Legend) has been discarded from the priorities of patchers.

Shame on you !

Apparently, a German version of this game was released just before being translated into English.

By the way, I salute Psygore for its work on the brand new whdload of Colossus Chess X, which is really a fine chess game for the Amiga.

Have a nice time,

Lightbulb Get it from my web site

Ok guys (any ladies fan of Civilization ?)

I made a HD pre-installed package out of the 4 floppy images .
One of the patchers helped me with this (He's from the country where they make the best Whiskey in the world, but doesn't drink himself).

It's anything 'HD' you want to call it, but it's not a whdload so don't expect all the fancy tricks and bits of whdified games.

The game includes a script, which is really a life-saver if you don't want to ruin your evening assigning hypothetic drives to the folder you unpacked VOD into, so please don't modify the text files.

I put it to download on my French web site, don't worry the link is obvious and the game is in English. I should do a download-pad in English some day...

As for the game itself, well, it's a cross between Pirates and Colonization in which you explore, meet and trade with the natives, set up settlements and fight pirates etc.

The original 1994 German version is OCS/ECS with a separate AGA version. The 1995 English version is ECS/AGA only which auto detects AGA machines and then uses the enhanced AGA version gfx. (info taken from EAGER).

If you happen to know any (preferably good) HD installable game that has a lame installer, pm me, I'll see what I can do, as patchers are not likely to whdify such games.

V.O.D. - HD version link page :
netcomet.info Eng Download Pad
(better use a download manager)

Voyages of Discovery is not AGA enhanced, and I don't know why you'd go looking at EAGER anyway for information.

I've played the German PC DOS version, with some CD Audio tracks. I like Christoph Kolumbus, would be nice to have a WHDLoad patch.

It would be nice to have it translated to English, as well as Oldtimer. It CAN be done, take Oldtimer for example. If you try hard enough you can find Polish homemade version on the net...

There's no need for an English Translation. The game was commercially released in English.

It's "whisky" in Scotland and "whiskey" elsewhere.

@ KG : Irish Whiskey is triple-distilled. That makes it the 'purest' if not the best.

For those who still use an A500, the game will run with 1MB of RAM.
True, I should have verifyied the AGA/ECS status, but quite frankly the graphics are nice, that's about all you should need to know about 'em. As nobody seem able to pull out screenshots showing the differences, it sounds much like a mundane debate to me.

may be in 1995, some game developers had mastered a way to make not graphic intensive AGA games fully retro-compatible with ECS Amigas...

Personally, I'd much prefer some feedback on how it compares to Civilization, or an indication on where to find a manual, as VOD received pretty high praise in its time, but nobody seems to be playing it these days.

Happy

My free hosting service is not very reliable, but for downloading small files, it should be OK. Only thing to have in mind is to use a download manager (DownThemAll! for Firefox is a pretty solid one).

These HD pre-installed games are rather small in size and already repacked,
I guess mirroring them on KG web site ain't worth the trouble, but anyone is welcomed to write a few words about the repacks on their Amiga related web site.

Not too sure about the kind of official release you're expecting for half a dozen homemade repacks of nearly-unknown Amiga games. My advice is grab them before I ask visitors to register as members .

Hope I don't sound like I am pretending to be the KillerGorilla of HD-installable, never-to-be-WhDified games !?

It's nice to have your preinstalled games Deleauvive! It saves the hassle to go through the installation process (which is sometimes a pain in the ass ). So thanks for sharing them
Well if you do let's say at least 200 HD installs we talk again about the KG issue

Summing up:

1. We want a WHDLoad patch for Christoph Kolumbus / Voyages of Discovery
2. Irish Whiskey, WTF? Scotch only, sorry Deleauvive.

@Retro-Nerd : Why not play the game this way for the time being ? Or may be you are missing the nag screen ? Patchers are really busy coders from what I've understood. Wouldn't you prefer them to focus on work-in-progress whdloads and fixes ?

@CyberDuid : No chance, sorry. I simply don't have time to do this for each and every HD installable game, creating DATs, and so on.

This said I'd be very pleased to install a few more of them, especially if EAB members consider they're worth checking out.

May be it could be an opportunity to balance the feeling there's an overwhelming number of patched action games compared to adventure/exploration ones.

Also, I guess I should ask the right people at HOL to change the HD status from unknown to yes for those few titles.

Finally, I can get valuable help here and there, but the panel of hacks I can put forth is really limited.

1. Which nag screen? Of course i use a registered WHDLoad version.

2. Not all "Work in progress" patches are listed on the WHDLoad.de site. It also depends on if it's an "easy to do" install or not.

I requested a patch for "1869" some month ago and Psygore posted that he is already working on it.

1869 may have some similarities with VOD, I would say the latter is the clear winner, if you asked me. Is there a reason why you didn't ask him for VOD first ?

If you're having a more direct connection, what about suggesting him to see if patching Flight Sim II or Gnome Ranger can be done in a decent time frame ?

No Patcher proposed himself yet for any of these two magnificent classic games. (well, FSII wasn't the most impressing 3D game on the Amiga, but it's still considered as a historical achievement)

I haven't really a better direct connection to Psygore than you. Ask him via pm if it's possible, he's a nice guy.

Or open another Thread in this forum section and request a patch. Maybe another slave coder lurks in and offer his help, who knows.

@KG : I'll put it another way : There are far more ordinary Scotch Whiskys (like the brand most people drink in discos) than Irish Whiskeys.
So I consider it wiser to pick up a bottle of Irish Whiskey if you're not a connoisseur.

@Retro-Nerd : It's hard to believe he's just that ordinary nice guy.
In my mind, he should be compared with some kind of Shiva deity, gifted with 8 hands, or with a multiple identities bearing superhero, like Flash.

By the way, it could be an idea to make the CD audio tracks from VOD MS-DOS version available to download as mp3s, for Amiga VOD player's ears pleasure.

EDIT : The "soundtrack" of VoD is available on my web site. Thanks Retro-Nerd !

Do you have them as MP3s? Never heard the CD tracks. Are they really good or just 'polished' versions of the Amiga tracks? Anyway would be nice if anybody can share them

Well, my German Christoph Kolumbus CD contains 29 tracks. Most of them are ship descriptions with German speech or short music snippets.

But there are a few tracks with beautiful music. I'm just ripping this tracks, stay tuned.

Hi,

I just updated the Preinstalled HD version of Voyages of Discovery to netcomet.info ENG Download Pad. This one doesn't need the assign script anymore, since it was entirely installed with the provided installer (which doesn't work from my workbenches for mysterious reasons).

I can upload the German version if you're interested, but I wasn't able to try it with my setup.

If someone, anyone has a working original English version of this game, AGA or not, please let us know. The differences in the crunching routines from both versions seem to obliterate the idea of exchanging the resources files in order to get an unaltered English version out of the German version.

(if you don't understand, don't worry, I am making comments to myself )

Hi,

Hope you don't mind the "upping" of my July request, but as JOTD seems to be "back dans les bacs"* for good, I'd like him to examine the opportunity of WHDf'ying this game.

"Voyages" is one of the very few good counterparts to Civilization, and it stayed in the shadow of Sid Meyer's game for much too long, plus it has a great soundtrack, as Retro-Nerd pointed out. I am sure many, many gamers would enjoy rediscovering this fine Civ-like (and pirates-like), via a WHDload installer.

* "back dans les bacs" is our most famous rappers duo word to indicate they will be present in music stores, again with their new album on the shelves

Seriously Deleauvive, can you please stop posting / deleting / reposting the exact same thing in this thread every few days. That's 4 times now...

Why are you doing this??? I'm sure whoever's attention you are trying to get will eventually read your post...

Agreed (yeah, it took a while before I realized). Kolumbus is the one which received the AGA blessing.
Not too sure why they did that, especially since the German version was released first . Neither was it made with lowering number of disks (6 VS 4) to swap in mind, since the game bears an installer.

Some reviews for a few "forgotten gems" are fine reads (Gravity...). Anyway, the claim that VoD is both AGA and ECS time is false. Eventually, it's up to Eager's author to edit the datasheet of this particular game accordingly (btw, seems the site is down as of now).
