You can't use the dats in romcenter.

You need to use clrmamepro.

The only way of creating dats for whdload games is by either:

A) Scanning the contents of subfolders inside the zips. This is problematic with non-windows filenames and causes a lot of headaches. Plus, romcenter can't scan the contents of subfolders inside the zips.

B) Treat each zip file as a solid file. This works fine in clrmamepro, but unfortunately isn't supported by romcenter.

So, you'll need to use clrmamepro, or not use the dats!

A renaming script isn't likely to scan the crc's (or MD5 for that matter) of the files is it?

To be useful it needs to check the hashes otherwise it'll get confused between zips with the same name.

Yeah the updates won't work with a batch file.

I've been speaking to two people on IRC, both who have had many old packs lying about and the new dats have worked fine in sorting out both of them.

I'm more than happy with the dats, you just need to get to know clrmamepro

Maybe you could add an info that these DAT files are only useful if you got the zips NOT from your site.

Lets give an example...

Say THB has been collecting my packs since 2006.

He has a folder full of all the packs and updates from then until now.

THB has many old files, many new files, many files which later found out had errors. etc. etc.

Take a look at these two files for example...

MonkeyIsland2_v1.0.zip
MonkeyIsland2_v1.1.zip

they are both Monkey Island 2 but one of them has an older slave.

In my DAT I keep only the latest version of every game.

MonkeyIsland_v1.0.zip would not be included in the dat because it has been replaced with the newer v1.1 version.

So...

without going through manually, how will THB know which of all of his thousands of files are out of date, which ones have errors etc. etc.

Well, luckily for THB, I've created a dat.

If THB loads up clrmamepro with my games dat, it'll look through all of his files in a directory and by referencing against the dat it knows which files are old and useless.

Such as MonkeyIsland2_v1.0.zip

clrmamepro can then be used to keep only the uptodate files, removing all of the redundant files so you are right up to date!

A tiny problemo there, my gory-lla friend, with the newest Demos archive.
My current collection, is sorted alphabetty by demo's creator/developer/group name, while your's sorted alphabetty by each and every demo's name.

... now what? How to marge'em easly? :/
By hand, I'd have to enter each demo's folder to check the group's name and copy...

Why would you want to merge them? Where are the other demos from?
