That looks like a mighty nice mod! Very clean and leaves your trapdooor ready for other expansions, like an accelerator. Good one!

The A600 trapdoor edge connector doesnt have the signals for an accelerator, but you could make a clock port adapter. (Kinda like the one on the A602 from Jens Schoenfeld)

Oh you are right.
But doesn't the A600 have a clockport as well?
I am so confused, haven't opened mine in years :P

Just a tip for everyone who wants to create A600's trapdoor devices: the peecee PCI slot have the same pin space of the old A600 trapdoor's edge (albeit a little longer). If you have a peecee mobo around, it is simple to unsolder one PCI slot to use on your own hackery!

I'm looking at doing this mod but there's one bit i dont understand.

Do you solder wires to pins 28 & 29 on both ram chips? and if so why are there only 2 wires coming out.

Sorry for noobiness

pins 28 of each chip are connected together, pins 29 of each chip are connected, there are 4 wires total, 2 from each chip.

in the picture, there are two wires from each chip to a simple bit of perf board, and then one wire from that to the mobo.

I have since re-done this using 30Awg wire, which i had none of before, just need to update the pics.

@Merlin....i know and muchly appreciated mate...but i couldnt get the clear picture.

Killed too many brain cells i think.

My a600 board is a rev 1 and marked as an a300 ...will this still work on this board as the instructions i think were for a rev 2.

Just to clarify an earlier post.

I blindly purchased six S3 Trio cards off Ebay and found that the chips are not compatible with the A600 upgrade .

Attachment 17239

Are these of use to anyone before they go in the bin?

Those S3 cards are useful for people who have the MediTator busboard! If those ppl don't have a Voodoo, of course.

Hey Zetro,

The upgrade is supposed to be 1Mbyte right?

A600 has 16-bit wide data bus right?

There are two chips per Mbyte right?

Total 4 chips (the original two plus the new two?) giving 2Mbytes right??

If that is right then each must be chip must be 8-bit wide (not 16-bit) and each must be 512K x 8 (not 256K x 16) right?

If so the diagram in your tutorial PDF is wrong.

Also all the RAM chips you've listed are definitely wrong (they are 256K x 4 !!)

I recommend you remove your tutorial until you can fix it.

Edit: Looking at the German page they have posted an updated the parts list (looks like you copied it without checking )

Edit 2 : I guess they could be 256x16 chips afterall.

@Alexh

there 256*16 m8y. and yes i double checked before use, and downloaded the specification from AllDataSheets.com

I do need to update the PDF for a couple of typo's and add some more images

@Eclipse

I can send you a nice set of pre-soldered and 30AWG wired chips, all you need to do is put them in place and solder the for wires in place to two points on the board.

including postage say £5 ?

you could do it cheaper possibly by getting a cheap ISA graphics card from eBay or storage and rob the chips of that.

PM me if you want some chips

It does not look like you did.

From your Tutorial / schematic:
Micron MT4C4256 = 256k x 4 (NOT COMPATIBLE)
Hitachi HM514256 = 256k x 4 (NOT COMPATIBLE)
Fujitsu MB81C4256 = 256k x 4 (NOT COMPATIBLE)
I could go on.

All the parts mentioned in yours & Merlin's PDF/schematic are not 256K x 16 but are 256K x 4 and so are probably not compatible?

256K * 4 = 1024 K-bit or 128 K-bytes per chip

256K * 16 = 4096 K-bit or 512 K-bytes per chip (4 chips = 2Mbytes)

I meant in total if you had 4 of those.
256K*4*4/8=512Kbytes.
Edit: Same conclusion anyway.

I doubt the pinout of 1Mbyte chips would work. They are probably 1-pin (per side) more. It depends on the pin layout.

Eclipse,

Zetr0 has confirmed that he has successfully completed the mod and has kindly provided me with the chips to do one of my own.

Just waiting on confirmation of what pins actually need to be soldered (nudge nudge )

Not had any luck with this mod at all guys.

I've tried four different types of chips with no joy at all - green screen, yellow screen, light grey screen and no difference at all!

One pair came from an old 1200 mb, but still no go.

All look the same as the 600's but I have no way of telling if they're compatible or not.

So, two questions..

What's the highest temperature I should be using to remove the chips from a graphics card with hot air?

Does anyone have two known compatible pairs to sell (as my mb is now flashing green with mod removed)

Edit: The board being worked on is a a300 rev.1 - type one.

Regards
Magno

Power light flashing?

If so, must have a short on the ic's or a pin not connected. I had a flashing green power light, when 1 pin wasnt connected.
