Archos 605 Wifi

I just got one of these beauties for christmas...
http://www.archos.com/products/gen_5...try=gb&lang=en

Not only is it a wonderful gizmo, but it has AMIGA heritage too!
Archos made some nice Amiga peripherals in the 90's

I was looking into buying one DDNI.
I like my iPod Touch and video, but it's a pain converting all those AHEM movies I have from .avi to MP4 (iPod format).

How is web browsing on it?

Pretty good, All forums so far, Ebay, Youtube all work well. Flash movies play well but only upto flash 7. SWF games run, but many are too slow, some are great though (Bowman is my fav) Most Sites load surprisingly quickly - about half speed of a firefox page. Very occasionally on some sites there are some text alignment problems. You can zoom into web pages for ease of reading too.

The extra cost for the Web, Mpeg2 and QT plugins is a scam though... Factor this in before purchase.

Media filetype support is superb. mp3 xvid divx mpeg4 avi wmv vob all play very well. The screen is bright and super detailed - I was expecting eyestrain,
but have watched full movies comfortably.

Music playback is good, but I think smaller devices are better suited to that.

Photo viewing is superb. drag screen to move between pictures Zoom rotate and flip.

I went mad and bought the DVR dock. (£50 from Currys if you haggle) This allows the 605 output to be displyed on your TV. Also it turns the 605 into a hard disk recorder. Recorded films or shows can even be edited on the device to crop adverts or overruns.

The best feature is the way the 605 networks with your PC and allows wifi streaming of your PC media library content.

Needless to say, I love this device....

Here's an idea I have:
Like the way I use my GP2X for playing emus on my TV via TV Out cable, I can watch my video the same way with the Archos 605.
The only downside is that the dock costs $100+ more. Thanks for the advice!

@Fred,

yup Archos kit is great stuff, but they really know how to extract your cash...

$100 is a good UK price for the dock..some outlets in US have it for $100 standard price but p&p to UK was pricey. The Retail price in UK is £70... I had to haggle hard to get it for £50!

linux,
it has been hacked to run some linux distros. (havent looked into which though)
The browser is opera.

@stainey, the most frustrating thing is, the codecs are in the device firmware all the time. Paying $$$ only unlocks them.... Alot of people at archosfans.com are trying to find a "fix"

Yeah guys, that is what has turned me off to it on the past. True, they have to make money, but I think the trend towards milking every bit out of you is not nice.
I am an Apple user, and I notice this about them too.

Why don't you just watch the videos on your GP2X with TV-out?

Becuse I don't lie the resolution, PJ. It's ok, don't get m wrong, but I have seen the Archos and I like the picture better than GP2X. I also use my iPod in this manner, but most of my files are not iPod spec. I don't feel like converting them all.

The battery in my Archos is now Fooked... Not charging at all. Works well on the TV dock still.

It is not a simply open and replace job either....

I got one of these in xmas 2007 (I think), a 605 wifi 160gb. It's a fantastic piece of kit when it works, but the reliability is on par with the 360's I've had..

My battery died xmas last year, got it replaced a week before the warranty ran out. Then the hard drive died the same day it got back, and I managed to get them to fix it.

Now the touch screen has died, and the hard drive corrupts itself semi weekly, usually while im trying to watch something so I have to go back and put backups back on and hope it lasts the rest of the programme.

I wonder if this is another way of trying to make me upgrade and sap my cash, like all those plugins I had to buy. Still, for the year that it worked, it was very nice.
