where do you live?
I might end up with four....
also there is no ppc competition, the competition is the number of G-Rex4000 that a person has.... come back with 2 G-Rex4000D's and then we can compete!

The real irony is that no Amiga 060 cards were produced before Commodore's demise in 1994. Phase 5 released the Cyberstorm 1 in 1995, some 6 months after Escom purchased C= and about 8 months before they too would declare banruptcy. I'd bet that if C= had survived that they would have went down the PPC route too in the mid/late 90s (and probably will have still been using it in 2002 when the AmigaOne was released given their laziness/love affair with Motorola chipsets). I think Apple has illustrated quite nicely that the OS (and the underlying software) more than the hardware makes the computer.....not that this will necessarily win them the war, mind you.

AFAIK OS4 for PPC-equipped Amigas will run most of the "classic" software via JIT emulation, perhaps even more software than 060-based Amigas can run natively at present. Add existing WarpOS/PowerUP software and AmigaOne software (some of which may need optimisation or recompiling to run suitably on PPC-equipped Amigas), then OS4 isn't as useless as many people here would make it out to be. Whether it's worth spending the crazy money being asked for Amiga PPC cards is another matter. Might be worthwhile for A3/4000 owners, but not A1200 owners given the price vs performance ratio.

So when exactly do we get to put Bill McEwen in a stock and throw tomatoes at him?

I'm greek and I think Amiga OS 4.0 is a nice upgrade. The hardware to run it is too expensive though.

Almost what I was thinking:

I'm a geek and I think Amiga OS 4.0 would be nice to play with. The wrong hardware to run it though.

To all of the people whining an moaning about it being a PowerPC-only OS: An x86 compatible version would not contain the Petunia JIT becuase that part of the OS is written in PPC Assembly. EUAE has its own x86 JIT already so there wouldn't be enough demand for an x86 version of AOS 4. The rest of the OS is portable though.

Just look at the demand for AROS developers at http://aros-exec.org if you want some indication on how popular an x86 version of AmigaOS would be.

Don't suppose you'd consider selling your spare one and making someone else happy would you? I am sure they'd be falling over themselves to get your spare one. So far there aren't any CSPPC cards available ANYWHERE!

OS4 needs some support. It has been developed by real Amiga programmers. If they get no return on this product, will they bother with the Amiga ever again?

I would be happy to buy it, (regardless if it is considered as irrelevant or outdated by the OS world) if only to help promote an active Amiga programming community... Consider your purchase of OS4 as a big shareware contribution to the Amiga world

So I am too lazy to research:

Hyperion beat Amiga in the lawsuit, I am guessing?

DDNI: Thank you.

@all the moaners: At least SOMETHING seems to be happening to the Amiga. I for one, would buy OS4 just so I can say "it's not MY fault it failed" when AInc in 6months time announces it's bankrupt.

I won't be buying it and it won't be my fault either. It's corporate stupidity that killed the Amiga.

Yeah i must admit, that despite the valid points people like PJ have, we really have become a real pessimistic bunch haven't we. Like grumpy old men, grumbling about everything, although yes Amiga Inc is run by a bunch of fuckwits, and i will agree with PJ on his most recent comment.

But a real Amiga for me is an 680X0 CPU based one. Amiga was Amiga based on its beautiful chipset and architecture. Its OS was just a beautiful extension of what was already an amazing system.

I do welcome OS4.0, but as we have learned from past experience and the quote we all know "Just 2 more weeks", its unlikely we will see it happen on the 30th of November.

I highly doubt too that we'll se OS4 on the 30th this month
If someone asked me two, three years ago I would have been a believer
