BBSs and Door Games

Ahh good old nostalgia, it got me back into Amigas and it's now led me down memory lane to the days when the BBS was king and the internet was either inaccessible or just plain old crap.

Apart from the chatting and the files there were of course the door games, simple ansi affairs but many of which were very addictive like Legend of the Red Dragon or TradeWars 2002.

Does anyone remember these games (and the 1000's more) and does anyone miss them?

That's them, well versions of them at least.

I've actually setup a game of Legend of the Red Dragon II, I was just using this to gauge if there was any interest in bbs games at all first.

Oh and I already killed THB in L.O.R.D. II

Well yeh thats what I thought, LORD II is a fun game, ok so it has ansi graphics but if you can get over that its a very large world with extremely quirky humour (and goats) with plenty of oppurtunities to kill other players

It's even got a mobygames entry
http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/le...ld/screenshots

There's a couple of us playing atm, although some are finding it difficult to find telnet clients with good ansi support.

lord2 requires more ansi support than lord1, so ive no idea if that java telnet app will be good enough.

Windows XP own telnet program should work fairly well though.

Ahhh met some nice people on BBSs back in the day, had a nice 400 phonebill for a quarter once That didn't go down too well with the folks at home. No one could get through either as I hogged the line

Never played any games though on them, usually just file transfers/chatting

Like you say the Internet was hardly anything - a few pages stuck together... look at it now though

Hmm would be cool to have the old acsii based BBSs back
Gawd thinking about it I remember a couple I visitied....

Bredbury BBS < that site had a novell hack which I eventually used at college for testing wasn't such a good idea as it broke their servers! oops I almost got kicked out for that...

A few other manchester BBSs.... can't remember the names though...

Then I started to use Compuserve on my 1200 although that was really really carp. EVentually ditched the 1200 and bought a PC as surfing the net with a 1200 wasn't my idea of fun tbh. I do still miss BBS's though, they were different and had their own personality to them...

A reply! Hurrah!

400 for a quarter eh, not bad but my first quarterly phone bill after getting a modem was 665! Even my 2nd one was over 400 I believe.

I've got the BBS running atm but there's only a small games menu on it at the moment, although I've now got 4 other EAB'ers playing LORD II.

I also ran a BBS in Manchester "back in the day" but i came to the BBS scene a little late, they hadn't died yet but the decline was starting

Oh and yes Compuserve were utterly crap!

I better finish my whdload pack to give you something to do for gamebase, rather than this BBS CRAP!

THB KNOWS WHAT YOU'RE UP TO, AND ONCE HE TELLS ME, I'LL TELL YOU IT'S NOT GOING TO WORK!

Ahh kG this distinct lack of enthusiasm for BBSs leaves me with a distinct lack of enthusiasm for checking your whd packs for the inevitable errors..

Legend of the Green Dragon is a very good remake, although the original Legend of the Red Dragon can still offer a lot more with the right expansions.

But L.O.R.D. II is nothing like LORD or LOGD!

You can play it with a java telnet client now if you like and are too lazy to use your own telnet prog. simply goto http://forestbbs.xiik.net/

If someone could "remind" me how to get the serial to internet crapola working under WinUAE I could put back my old scene BBS online... I have a backup of a 5 node BBS from 1993.
