I think we are talking digital D-pads only, in which the response time is MUCH shorter than with any joystick (it's a matter of size and location)

Sure, but it seems that john4p uses the Analogue stick of his Dualshock pad. The d-pad of the Sony PSX pad is awful.

Anyway, a stick is better for the most older games. A pad is good for newer platformer games or shmups.

My PS1 analog whit CD32 adapter is.. all the money!
i prefer the pad for lot of games except pacman style games..

Dualshock all the way.

I use it for PC and PS3 gaming.

Even though the vibrate function refuses to work with my crappy old adapter I don't care.

I have tried PC "copies" of the Dualshock and the level of quality just isn't there so make do without it.
