I think I narrowed it down to this one file:

ftp://aceroms:roms@202.101.177.172:8...ckerlight).zip

It appears to be missing and once the error page is displayed it makes all the other links invisible too

I have also noticed some slowness on their FTP server, this could also be some cause of some of these problems.

Try Emuchina, if it's busy (it usually is) connect to irc.newnet.net and join #emuchina .There you can find fservers that host roms (and ADFs) and you can type !list to learn who hosts what.

Thanks Burseg, I'll check that out. One thing, what do u recommend for an IRC app, I've never used these. Never had the incling or desire to use chat apps in general.

Since I'm using using Windows XP and Amigas together, I'd want to use the PC side of things until I get a NIC for my 4000.

I'm using Trillian right now, pretty straight forward and all. I do hate the queues however

Don't blame the emuchina IRC fserver, at least you are able to download files from it. (compared to the classic http download)

hey guys ! if your are sleeping on NewNet, have a jump to #abime.net & #amigatronic

True, that is the real reason for using this alternate method of d/l files. Aceroms tends to be down too much for me, but I like the way the IRC channels are setup as there seems to be many different TOSEC channels to choose from

IRC Newbie Question !

Using MIRC on a emuchina DCC server I keep getting this message in the window: "Closing Idle connection in 30 seconds...". This is after I have done my get commands and I am waiting to reach no 1 in the queue.

Anyone know how to stop this - it seems to happen after about 2 minutes of me not typing anything. I need to go to the toilet soon so don't wanna lose the connection !!!

you donīt need to be on the fserv itself to get the files you requested, just stay in the channel and if youīre no. 1 in the queue, you will get that file, just donīt leave the channel !!!

I'm a moron !!!

Thanks for all your help everyone (some PM'ed me too).

Idiots guide to IRC (written by a IRC idiot!!):

Download MIRC and connect to server NewNet (a random server or one you choose).

Close the channels list (you know where you wanna go)

Type /join #emuchina

admin spammer addition ;)
/join #abime.net
/join #amigatronic

Then you can chat to people her OR download some ADF's.

Type !list for a list of DCC file servers running.

It should say something like "Trigger: !GetFiles". So to access that server type !GetFiles. A new window should open once you click confirmation box.

Then you are browsing the file server so using dos-type dir/cd commands find the files you want.

Then type get filename.zip to queue your file. You can only queue a certain amount of files - to see your place in the queue type "queues".

Once you have filled your queue and/or chosen what you want then you should EXIT the DCC (you don't have to stay in like I was trying!). So type exit.

Eventually you should hit #1 in the queue and a message should be sent to you telling you that someone is trying to send you a file. This can be set to auto-answer.

Hope this helps, I have written this from my brief 1 hour exposure to MIRC/IRC/DCC so there are probably easier/quicker ways of doing things.

Speaking of aceroms, here's the latest news there:

Quote:
14 January 2002 00:48 : 123 Tosec rompacks :)
Most of you don't have a lot TOSEC roms, so downloading a lot of small files may be annoying.
Now TOSEC rompacks are avaiable, and you can grab ALL roms rocognized by a dat by downloading just ONE file.
Warning : these packs have been compressed in 7z format, so you must use 7-zip to unpack them.
If you can achieve higher compression ratio than us for the packs, please tell us the archiver you use and its settings ;)
And if you go to the TOSEC area, the only item bearing the Amiga line of clothing is:
Commodore Amiga - Installation, ROMs, Tutorials & Promotional

Major letdown for the TOSEC enthusiasts...

This is gotta be a storage issue. Why else would they go to the trouble of compressing this very large TOSEC database. The cost of storage has gone down quite a lot but I wonder if Aceroms is a commercial venture or do they rely on ads for income

Meanwhile, if you actually scroll further down the page, you'll come across a second list (single files) which contains the remaining Amiga pieces of clothing.

Is it still considered a "major letdown", Twist?

My bad. I only scrolled as far as Commodore Amiga and stopped. Thanks for pointing that out, Marz.

Personally I don't mind the single large archive as I have a DSL connection. The problem is with the majority of users whom still have dial-ups

I can remember the day I used my first 90 baud acoustic modem, boy was that fun. I think I could send data faster using tin cans and some string :laugh

I also have noticed that the FTP server is really slow, keeps dropping my connection and the throughput is horrendous right now. Could just be a lot of traffic hitting the server now.
