Hello AMIGA500FAN, and welcome to EAB.

You can make that floppy drive work with your Amiga 500 using Stedy's PC floppy adaptor for Amiga.

However, you might need to do some work with a dremel to get it to fit in the case properly.

Floppys Panasonic JU-257A6xx works very stable at 150rpm.
In yers 2000-2002, more than 200 units I have modified panasonic floppy to HDD. They work with any Amiga from OS 2.04.

i have a 1200 for repair, i remove warranty and open, the drive is broken, is panasonic ju-257a605p and under the mainboard i find a wire from pin 2 to 34 (like escom-amiga tecnology), remove the floppy and insert one from another 1200 (chinon) and remove a wire from 2 to 34 and add a wire for use the chinon, now thw 1200 is perfect, but i need more info on original panasonic ju-257a605p, in the escom-amiga tecnology a1200 the drive is 880k or 1760?

I have to look for it in the recesses of hard drive on my A500T.

As I have written worked on it in 2002. Later, the demand is over and the cooperation with company ended.

yes, I know. but by '1,44Mb drives' I meant 'ordinary cheap PC floppys that cannot easily slow down to 150RPM but can be modified to work as 880/DD Amiga drives'. it should have been obvious.

The Panasonic JU-257A 605P is a PC compatible 1.44MB floppy drive unit typical of those used by Escom in their AT1200 machines. The Escom AT1200 motherboard is modified to allow PC compatible floppy drives to be used as 880K Amiga drives.

These units were never designed to be used at 150 RPM, so they cannot be used as 1760K Amiga high density drives.

Yes, but after my modifications to the floppy (Panasonic) could be used as HD 1760K.

Today I will try to find documentation.

These floppy drive were almost not corruptible. Most are dirt or heads, or swiches DP, HD/DD.

No need to find it today (I mean, there's no hurry), but it will be VERY interesting .
Was it a complex modification?
And (a 1-million dollar question, I know) could it be applied to other models/manufacturers?

Thanks for posting, Boboo_SK!

I should imagine that jarob's modification will turn out to have been something quite similar. The conversion to Amiga 1760K is not trivial.

Yes, the modifications are similar, as modeled on the same datasheet and specifications.
I did not find full documentation, but I have a schematic and picture of board.
Missing images only connections. I will open one of my floppy and do pictures.

Here are pictures of floppy during and after modification: http://www.fotosik.pl/u/jarob/album/1065532

Only the Panasonic motor runs stable at 150 rpm. I also tried Samsung and Mitsumi floppy, but the motor was struggling.

@Jarob

Progressing good way, but you got the error. Incorrect generates RDY 880KB. Your logic, it can damage data when writing to disk. RDY must start when the Index - Falling Edge

I'm not saying there are no errors. I just have not seen them. Write DD 100% good. I've never had this problem.

If you drive generates RDY, so everything is all right. Your solution is simple, if it works, so I congratulate you.

Panasonic/Pabasonic must be the better drives to use with Amiga. I still have Jope's modified drive in use and working great!

The AAP156 diode is a germans diode. It has a smaller voltage drop junction than the silicon diode and it is all.

Germanium diode forward voltage drop is approximately 0.3V.

Plate with 2 image is universal. I did try the Samsung and Mitsumi floppy. Please install these components, which are in the diagram, for a 1 picture. This can be seen also on photos in album with modifications made.

Anyone know if you can modify two drives and put them in an A2000?

What if you want to use the external connector? I've seen a few posts about diodes....

I got bored...

YE Data YD-702D-6037DA 3.5" drive - replaced DF1 Chinon in A2000 with this. It had jumpers (!?) for DS0/DS1, so I made it DS1, and changed from DC to RDY (there was also a jumper for this.) I then jumpered pin #2 to DC on the bottom of the drive.

Mitsumi D359T5 3.5" drive - replace DF0 Chinon in A2000 with this. I removed the bridge from DS1 and made it DS0. I also removed the jumper from DC and change it to RDY. I then jumpered pin #2 to DC on the bottom of the drive.

Bottom line: I ran the Odyssey mega demo with the two internal drives (and an external Amiga DF2) and it all seemed to work fine. I'm going to try to format some drives now.

I have some more spares laying around, mostly Teac FD-235HF's, so I will try those and see how they work as well.

Just an update on the FD-235HF's...

Someone in this thread attempted to modify one:

http://www.amibay.com/showthread.php?t=9934&page=2
http://www.kipper2k.com/amiga/teac.jpg

Going from DS0 to DS1 was easy.

I noticed that they did hook pin #2 up to DC (directly on the IC). But, they needed to unhook pin #34 (which was also hooked to DC), so they cut that trace going to pin #34 (the jumper usually does this.)

However, the last piece of the puzzle - jumping RDY - I think they tried doing this by hooking up pin #34 to pin #30. This won't let the Amiga use an external drive. If you notice the picture, it looks like the other set of jumpers (R16) next to DS0/DS1 was for RDY - I simply moved the 000 ohm resistor from the right to the left (parallel) in R16. Didn't do the pin #34 to pin #30 thing. Hooked up the drive, booted it, and it apparently did the trick. I booted up and it saw DF0 inside the A2000 and DF2 on the external bus. (Saw both floppies too, good old NewTek Demo Reel 1).

Not sure if this is 100% electronically correct, but it worked.

I have a recycler looking for drives for me with the RDY/DC pins either on the back of the drive or that have the jumpers labeled at the bottom. This recycler has quite a stock of stuff, so I hope they find some stuff
