Question These Arcade Joysticks?

Does anyone have first hand experience with them? I'm wanting to use one with Mame and I know there's an option in there for them

Just wanted to know your thoughts and if they're any good?!

Fwiw I'm using a PS2 joypad which is okay but not brilliant - prefer the old knob stick styleee.

Danke!

Hello Paul_s,

I have one of these: HotRodSE

It's absolutely wicked, had it for about 6 years now and still going strong without any issues after many hard gaming sessions with friends (some who are joystick, button bashers / killers)... One of the best things I've ever purchased

The HotRodSE is the original, the XArcade came out afterwards. XArcade; I heard years ago that there were *slight* issues with responsiveness but I'm sure it has been fixed by now.

The XArcade has some advantages over the HotRodSE though:

... Re-programmable controls / button mappings.
... Can use it with PC and various consoles via special adapters.

Also, if you can afford one the SlikStik is pretty cool: SlikStik Professional Arcade Products. Take a look at the Quad Unit, the Fighter Unit and the Solitaire Unit

Excellemental, thanks duck! I knew someone on here had a fancy arcade joystick but I couldn't think who it was!

Was looking at the Hotrod earlier too! Nice pad although I wish they did a solo version of it - cheaper though compared to the x-arcade solo and you get the extra player controls, hmmm decisions decisions

There are some x-arcade modded one's with a ball mount instead of the long shaft thingys you get as standard. Can you mod the Hotrod like this too?

http://www.gremlinsolutions.co.uk/pr...arcademod1.htm

That solitaire unit looks the bomb! but at the prices

Think this will be between the Hotrod SE/x-arcade... hmmm out of interest is there a distributor in the UK for the hotrod joysticks???

Interesting, I'm sure you could though never tried to take it apart... You can get arcade quality items / parts from here: Happ PC Arcade Products

If you're feeling very adventurous you could even build your own: Build Your Own Arcade Controls FAQ

Yeah, I like the spinner. I want a spinner build into a joystick for use with games like Ikari Warriors, Heavy Barrel, Midnight Resistance etc

Hmmm, not that I'm aware of. I had to get mine shipped from the USA but this was 6 years ago. You can definitely purchase the XArcade from the UK though...

Actually, I might move this thread to the Retrogaming General Discussion section and change the title slightly if that's ok?

I know there are a few guys on here who actually have arcade cabinets like Konrad and spiff (if I remember correctly). I'm sure they add some input

Edit: this thread is also interesting; Arcade cabinet and emulators

Cheers duck Just got to find a Hotrod now! Proving to be a pain in the bum. The European distributor don't list em anymore on their website.

Tried a few of the american sites and no joy either... will email the European distributor and find out what's going on. Will give Hanaho a mail too - who knows might be able to persuade em to make me distributor I wish... would be cool though with 50 of em

Hmmm, I actually have 2 x HotRodSE arcade sticks... One is in London and the other one is in Sydney (which my twin brother is taking care of / using)

Just looked through my e-mail archives. The one that I bought and sent to Sydney was ordered on the 09/03/2001 from a place called Computer's Worth. The website still exists, maybe worth visiting / e-mailing them...

Not heard a sausage yet, maybe it's just me being impatient

If I can't get hold of a Hotrod then sod it I'll push the cart out and grab a solitarie - you only live once I guess, might as well make it worthwhile.

Oh my god, just looked at all the options you can have on the solitaire. Credit card is crying at me

I'm postive that I just clicked the Buy button from the HotRod page which then takes you to here:

http://www.hanaho.com/Products/HotRodJoystick.php

The French retailer ADF Informatique doesn't seem to have this for sale anymore

This does look cool but wouldn't you like a 2 player arcade stick??? It's the best playing with friends

I'm still keen on getting a rotary joystick, maybe I could buy one from here and attempt modifying my HotRodSE

The Ikari Warriors octagonal rotary mechanism one is what I remember using in the arcades:

Heavy Barrel

Ikari Warriors

Midnight Resistence

Actually I have an arcade cab AND a hotrodSE (yay geekscore)

Damien pretty much nailed it on his first reply, the hotrod is great! The only thing to add is that you really should go for the 2p variant. First off because arcade games are made for 2p and second because a few games actually can use two joysticks. The second one can simulate the spinner/rotary joysticks in smashTV. Mame also has a lot of special shortcuts you can use with the hotrod (or jamma interface) like insert coin, quit and so on so you don't need to use the keyboard.

As for the "real" arcade compared to the hotrod, it's the same thing, same parts (hap i think). If you really want to be picky some ppl prefer the less resistance and bigger buttons of the sega naomi cabs (astro city) But most retro gamers prefer the click feedback (from the micro switches) and streetfighter 6 layout of the hotrod.

(the button thing is kinda religious in arcade circles)

*edit*
Oh and make sure to pay for some decent transportation, the hotrod is heavy and we all love how the mail service treats packages.

Zetr0
Just do it!
