The Amiga is certainly not dead but it will almost certainly never come back a mainstream desktop computer.
Couple of days ago I went to a small gathering of Amiga enthusiasts here in Poland and saw the Efika mobo demoed together with MorphOS 2.0. It worked surprisingly well and I've already started saving up cash . Projects like this among others(OS4, AROS, WinUAE, MiniMig etc.) make sure that we have a way to enjoy the Amiga spirit on (fairly) modern gear. So stop dreaming and enjoy what's already available incuding all the classic hardware.

sorry i did not want to sound harsh or telling you what to do, just that in my opinion the threads on this subject, standing the fact different opinions are good and well, are already many and a little unuseful: it's not your responsibility, but i guess it's something this community should shrug off already.
however, that was just my personal opinion.

with emoticons, this what happens:
a couple of members do this: and 3 or 4 do that: someone
then the embittered do this face: or this one: i do this: Dizzy do this one: but he stick the tongue on Fred waiting with the mouth open:
mick_aka fakes asking for while in reality he already unbuttoned his pants: and that's not a thumb...

That is the best emoticon story I've ever seen. Such a tragic end.

Only a sugar daddy is going to save poor little amiga now. R&D costs $$$$$, not to mention getting the right people (not many around) not to waste your $$$$$.

You may well be able to use it as a lean mean hobbyist platform fast enough to run MacOS/Windows 98/Linux on the side while still being able to play old amiga games, which would be good enough for me. Advantage is that other desktop O/Ses have moved evolutionary rather than revolutionary due to decreased competition in last 15-20 years.

It will never compete on hardware horsepower or people resources, only way to be level is via what Linux does with OpenOffice etc, other already built apps through porting and emulation (i.e. I can run the same apps the others can), and for it to be more efficient. You need a lot of resources for the first two, just look at how many Linux has.

But you cannot beat the "standard" unless you are revolutionary. Not even the amiga 3000 was revolutionary hence the amiga lost because of that (it was a disappointment after 5 years, not even 256 colours like IBM VGA games, or 65k colours or 16 bit sound to keep the boundaries moving - haha and not even the a4000t years later had any of those), only the amiga 1000, which is not going to come again. (Unless some amiga zealot all of a sudden wins $100 million, and even then unlikely. However they could probably do something if they got together the old crew like Carl S, RJ Mical, Dave Haynie). Back to reality. I give you odds of 1000000 to 1.

Side note: I wonder how hard it was to do a much needed upgrade of
Paula to 16 bit sound and high density floppies. Surely this was mandatory???

EDIT: See my next post below.

EDIT: btw, I don't find these polls useful as they are just wishful thinking, and waste time I could spend coding

EDIT2: Oops tried to edit my previous post, but turned into a new post.... duh

I think there could be a market for something similar to this or this "idea", classic game with classic looking Mega Drive joypads with the game built in. It would be nice to be able to buy a "A1200" looking unit with new hardware, lots of built in games, which are easily accessed. I think if it was marketed like the abovementioned, i think it would even bring new users to the Amiga scene.

When i'm around shopping centres and there's a stall selling the units with the 50 classic arcade games, they are always surrounded. I think it proves with the success of XboxLiveArcade that its not all about the graphics and high def 7.1 surround sound, people still like playing the odd 2d shoot-em-up or Tetris clone etc. I don't think the "New Amiga" should try to be something its not and compete with something that is and always will be superior in the sense of hardware and capabilities.

Keep it retro!!

the only new amiga i'm willing to buy :

a replicate of a1200/6030 25Mhz/32mb fastram no bigger than a digital camera with a compactflash slot instead of IDE and a small bus where you could plug original I/O interfaces or newer PC compatibles ones (for mouse/pads/keyboard at least)...

it would have to be delivered with a preinstalled 4gb cf with classicwb and kgwhd packs with an included registered licence of whdload.

the whole produced in heavy serial mode and available on the shelves for less than 100USD.

New Amiga?
Amiga-ish hardware+OS.
No chance!

Desktop OS?
AmigaOS ( AROS v1.0+ ) on mainstream hardware.
Yummy! ( a sort-of alternate Linux )

For the hobbyist?
New-updated Classic box. ( eg: A1200-ish box with 'modern bits' built in )
Maybe.
( old stuff wearing out, eBay prices criminal, etc )
