Amiga Os is great because the way it is organised, C: S: Startup-sequence and user-startup etc etc.. Alse being a single user OS is great in these multi user OS days (I dont need it). Alse configuring it the way you like it yourself is really nice (MUI etc).

Morphos is based around all the same Amiga OS standards, one of the main (visual) difference being the Prefs is all in one window (all settings in one program).

--- And I almost forgot: Its so good to come home from a day of window$ problems at work, to a computer I can enjoy and doesnt need a re-install every year (or so).

That is so true! I remember using the same install of Workbench 3.0 on an 80mb TidBit HDD for about 4 years. Then the Amiga was "stored" for 10 years.

After this time I set it up and it booted and functioned perfectly!

Commercially as in, everybodys home.... not a chance in hell, other systems have flooded the market and everybody remembers the Amiga as a 16bit era thing with floppy disks, they don't actually know about all the crap you can bolt on.

Specialist market.... maybe, video editing or set top boxes or something, I am sure I read about some company using A600s in set top internet boxes years ago.

There. I've said it. Yes, I cried a little back then. Alone. That was a long time ago...

Indeed...I know a lot of people still remembering their Amigas. It's still a well known and recognized brand. I guess alot of people would just buy it out of curiosity. Probably a lot of companies would be happy to have a brand in their hands with such a reknown. It's weird how Amiga Inc manages to be as incompetent as they have shown over the last years. feel like there are tons of people just waiting for something useful to get released. And they do nothing...

Today, I work all day on a Mac. Sometimes on a Windows box (when I have to), others on Linux. But I never forgot my Amiga, nor it's great community.

So let me tell you what would work. What I believe in. Give us a good, cheap enough, hardware platform, even if a special, custom-made-hardware, one. Enclose it in a nice box. Then make it available for us to buy it online, in Europe and the US. Put AmigaOS4 on it, and bundle a free developer's kit with it. Then sit back and watch as people like me join the new Amiga community and develop for the platform.
exactly...

Java would be awesome. You would have to convince Sun to do this, or give it to those people at http://www.kaffe.org/ to do a Amiga version of their opensourced Java Virtual Machine..Hell, i would probably try to convert the Kaffe virtual machine to the Amiga myself. According to this page it's not all that impossible at all, especially being done on PPC or X86 Machines, which the Amiga should be aiming for anyway..

http://www.netrino.com/Articles/KaffeAnyone/index.php

Java, a working browser, various Media players, a capable modern graphics suite (like GIMP), some fresh development environments, the likes, and a couple of other applications would get the thing rolling again..

This is my Amiga vision for the future. The Amiga era is over, but a new one can start all over again. Give us the tools and watch us build a great platform!

If it happens, I'll be there. Will you?
The IF is probably the problem on this... I would be there on minute one.

I am a new member, but here is my 2 cents worth....

I look at it like this.

The chances of the Amiga making a comeback as as good as me going back in time to relive my youth.

I think the absolute best that we can hope for is a limited run of new Classic hardware. As much as I would like to see a new true Amiga, it is just not going to happen. I would definitaley NOT buy an Amiga badged PC. It just would just be the same.

Cheers
Andec

I voted no, but I would have voted no for the same question about Mac.
I just don't think they have the resorces or the user base.
My dream would be for Microsoft to buy them out and have an updated Workbench replace Vista.

IMHO the only "comeback" Amiga could do would be if something like EFIKA2 was supplied with AmigaOS4 or with MorphOS2. The former could be an Amiga and the latter would be an "Amiga-alike".

But it aint gonna happen.

Amigas were a brilliant combination of beyond-the-standards yet inexpensive hardware plus software capable of taking walloping profit from it's every part. If any of these elements is missing, we don't have an Amiga, and as far as I remember, there hasn't been one since the A4000T. In short, very unlikely given the historical panorama.

I'm sorry, but I much doubt it will happen.

Realistically the Amiga market is was it is, made by enthusiasts for enthusiasts.

Please anyone prove me wrong, I want to, but...

@xpect: well, yes & no

I can only say by the situation here in Poland from what I saw on the forums and Amiga-meetings, but generally speaking, the "old" amiga users got divided into 3 groups:
1. the Classic Amiga users that mostly play games and mingle with the hardware and sometimes do some mods or a pixelart.
2. the Pegasos users who are mostly into programming
3. the AmigaOne blood thirsty fanatics who think their hardware is the only one in the world and nobody deserves to be even considered an Amiga user who doesn't have an Amiga sticker... ...

The good part is, there are some youngsters out there (females even ) that got the Amiga bug somewhere, no matter, maybe their dad had an Amiga, maybe their brother/sister played one when they were younger... they somehow know it or found by accident - and what's the best part - they adore it!

I think if the question is if there will be ever a new, good priced, up-to-date Amiga with 100% compatibility to the classic Amigas, I guess it's : no (sorry ). However, like Shoonay said there are some (I hope quite a lot of ) people that remember the Miggy and even some that discover it right now

Good! There is hope then, with the females I mean

Seriously, here the situation, as far as I know, is more like point 1 you referred.

But i am always amazed is with young people in their early 20's who are truly hardcore fans about the Amiga.

My daughter plays Amiga games since she was 3 years old (she's turning 6 now) and never looked about another gaming platform. No PS2, Nintendo or later PS3. This is what truly amazes me.
