As I'm a old skool pen & paper junky, I would say they are even more RPG than EOB . But when it comes to compare these three games with 'normal' computer RPG's you're completly right. They miss the character setup/evolution (well there is little) and all the equipment stuff (yes except the weapons ).

Well you play the part of people (i.e. you role play the part of a geek or whatever in Elvira) so I'd say they were!

We're not talking about Dungeons and Dragons where you roll stats, etc. we're talking RPGs.

Well okay I'll try
A pen & paper RPG is much more like a adventure where you must find clues and talk to people to advance in your quest. So a computer adventure is like an RPG with no stats and fights.
A computer RPG is based on the fighting system of a pen & paper RPG. You have the stats, hitpoints and skills/spells. I would say 'tradional' computer RPG's (AD&D, Ultima, Might & Magic) are closer to strategy games than P&P RPG.
That's why I would say Elvira and Waxworks are RPG's (you have to solve puzzles and fight enemies), but you can count them as Action-Adventures which is also true.
These games are hybrids and somehow unique, so it's hard to put them in one corner

Black Crypt has a few mentions and I've not tried that so I think that will be a go once I have my Amiga sorted!

if you have enjoyed Dungeons and Dragons and Eye of Beholder (specially the first one: Black Crypt has no npc encounters) you'll love it!

For me Black Crypt has always been the number 1, as it was the first Amiga game I played, and it just blew me away. I still have the original large box version in the loft, with the software bug that gave you a sword with 158 hit points. I'm playing a pc port of DM at the moment, which has chaos in the same folder. Going to try to complete them first. (last time was about 18 years ago). But, now I have WinUAE running I'm heading straight for Black Crypt after that, then EOTB 1 & 2, followed by the Monkey Islands. Should keep me going for the next year

Aye it should.

I could never complete Chaos Strikes Back, even with the Character Hack, it was just too damn hard and confusing to get around.
