Hombre Project - PC to Amiga

This is what I see when I boot my current 'kick 1.3' setup. OK, it's not really a workbench screen but that's only because the Workbench that came with that version of the OS is pretty useless.
Just my little secret project that will hopefully be released next week

No, it's not a filemanager.

It's not going to stay secret for long once this thread progresses

Well, basically Hombre's a compilation of programs aimed at people who have 1.3 kickstart Amigas (like the A500) and want to linkup to their PCs to exchange data (ADFs). The whole package includes:
NO software copyrighted by Amiga Inc except Disk-Validator, but that's everywhere even on aminet and I think it's freely distributable.

A cool shell with built-in commands and name completion
3 programs for serial transfer
1 program for parallel transfer
Software to access FAT formatted disks

and tons more... including a proggie that enables you to mount a folder in Windows and access it like a normal drive and all this compatible with 1.3 kickstart (see here -> http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=21938. I was speculating then but now I know it's possible and works) . The idea is similar to that of ClassicWB but everything is crammed onto a floppy and runs on low-end Amigas.

I was pretty much fed up with people who go on selling some shitty software compatible only with DOS on E-Bay and decided to put something together that could be hosted on any site and transferred to a floppy and sent by some kind-hearted Amiga user to anyone who's trying to ressurect his/her fine machine -- the A500

All software comes from aminet, fish collection, lsd-legaltools etc. handpicked and configured.
It's not ready yet (still some cleaning up to do) but I'll need someone to test it before its release so PM me after this weekned and I'll send you a copy ADF and to anyone else who's willing to help

@ppill

That sounds awesome. Something like that is certainly needed.

I wonder what will happen in the future though. Newer computers won't have serial or parallel ports - just USB.

Very interesting, ppill. You can write back the adf's via null-modem cable directly to real amiga disks? Maybe it's time to dig out my old Amiga 500.

With Hombre you can write ADF back to floppies in many ways:

transfer via null-modem directly to disk (no need to store it in RAM) [transwarp, ADF Sender Terminal]

using the parallel ports and a special cable [Paradise]

using PC formatted floppies and ADFs packed with ZOOM or XMASH (no need to split the ADF because these crunchers almost always give you <700kb files) and require little memory. [MultiDos, ZOOM, XMASH, xpk package]

split the adf and using PC formatted floppies write the individual parts with tracktool (with the LOW and HIGH parameters to signal which cylinders are stored in each file) [TrackTool]

again use tracktool to write the adf form a folder in windows using the NET: mount entry (SLOW but works) [DNet, WinUAE, null-modem cable]

I'm still figuring out a way to support gzipped images...probably will end up using a PIPE: or somethin'

Everything is thought out in a way to cut down the number of swaps and as little overhead as possible(most things on the floppy work with 0,5 MB).

All sound very, very cool ppill

Maybe you should ask the mods to create a new thread somewhere and then move all related "Hombre" posts to it so that we don't cram up this one

What font does that Hombre screen use?. i used to use it years back but have since forgotten what it is. Im also after this wicked yellow mouse pointer i managed to have running then too, it was small but really nicely designed...

Im probably not going to find out about where that mouse pointer is, i know there were hundreds on Aminet, but that font i would like to get again.

@Paul Thanks!

@Blade002
The font is called thing and you can find it waiting for you in 'Da Zone'

With Hombre I use a proggie called NewTopaz and it can only load fonts in RAW format so if you want to use it under 1.3 kick it has to converted with PowerFonts8 for example. You'll find them both on the lsd-legaltools-0013 disk.

Well I do like the copper effect, but to be honest, I prefer the look of your original screen capture (in first post) without this effect, as it's easier to read, which is important when typing out commands

It will look more like the first screen once it's released and when using floppies to transfer data between the two machines will provide a special 2 colour 640x50 pixel screen(thanks to add36k command) to conserve as much memory as possible(916264 bytes to be exact on a 1MB machine with ZShell up and runing). The software that uses the parallel and serial ports is not that memory hungry and you can treat yourself to a couple enhancements like memclocks, DMouse, different fonts, Copper effects etc. but you're right -- the last shot takes it a bit too far

Thanks for all the kind words guys

But that's what EAB does to people. This place just hives with ideas and projects. Really inspiring! So I decided to fill a gap in current software packages and help out others like so many of you have already done.

For menu you can make custom keymap to have programs loading when you press F1, F2...F10. That's how I did my utility compilations on floppy.
