Why would you emulate an Atari?

Why would you emulate anything?

a) nostalgia (the big winner)
b) the original hardware is hard to come by in a decent working order, games even harder
c) I already have enough junk lying around

Ah! Excuse my ignorance. I did not know that the Atari 2600 was their old console machine. That does deserve respect. I thought that maybe you were saying it was worth emulating the Atari equivalent of an Amiga and that was intriguing me. I thought the Amiga versions of games were always better than the Atari versions.

WinUAE far and above all
NeorageX (latest super modded strange build that runs Samurai Shodown 5 etc...)
Zsnes WIP
WinVICE
VisualBoyAdvance
ScummVM (if that counts)
Nestopia
Fusion (mega drive/segacd/32x)
MagicEngine
Handy (lynx)
Caprice (Amstrad CPC)
VisualPinball & vpinmame
Steem
WinKawaks
T2k (Tempest 2000 Jaguar emu)
DosBox

those are the main ones that are damn perfect IMO!

AVANZE - Wow! I had an Atari 800XL. It was... um... not all that good really. I remember mine had some memory problem according to the "Test" you could run. Had a game on it called Eurpean Countries & Capitals (very exciting!) which played speech from the cassette which was fairly clever I suppose.

What is the best N64 emulator and do they run OK?

Project64 is best

There are also a few other emulators like 1964 and Mupen64

The games run pretty well, you just need to get the right plugins and play around with options etc...

As you can imagine they always recieve complaints from various LAMERS saying this game or that game used to run better in earlier versions of MAME or on other emulators
God, I fucking HATE this attitude: The whole purpose of an arcade machine was to present the public with a game they'd want to pump coins into, and to do so as efficiently on the available hardware of the time as possible: How does it make you a "lamer" to point out that if you need a bloated 4gb of anything to replicate the original arcade machine, and even then only at the curcuitry level (often breaking the visual or audible output to get that result), then you've seriously failed to capture the original machine with any accuracy at all? It would be like me saying "Well, human beings are nothing more than their biology, and so if I use beachballs for each atom, and glue them together until I've got a torso in exactly the same physical proportions down to the atomic level, even if it's the size of the solar system, I've accurately emulated a man." And if that's what you want to do with your life, then go for it. But don't you dare claim your view is more accurate to the nature of the thing, whilst insulting others because they don't agree with you. Because it's not true accuracy at all.

But to end on a positive note: Some emulators that are good, but aren't being ruined by technophile arrogance, are...
YAPE (C16) and VICE (C64),
Meka (SMS),
MESS (which runs multiple machines, a god send if you used to own some really obscure ones, like the Dragon 32)
DoSBox
Visual Pinball (Which comes with it's own editor, so you can make your own tables, as well as play the old classics)
BGB - (Gameboy and Gameboy Advance)
WinUAE (Of course...)
Final Burn Alpha (Arcade games the way they SHOULD be done.)
ZSNESW (Super Nintendo System)
Magic Engine (PC Engine)

You might want to try Nemu64 @ http://www.nemu.com

Not as good as Project64 but it will give you speed and good compatibility though.

Anyone remember UltraHLE?

Sorry to stick a question on here but I'm sure I just read in another thread that there is an Xbox version of WinUAE or equivalent Amiga emulator. Is there one for the PS2 and can some kind soul point me in the direction of where to download it (assuming it is a decent, FREE and versatile program) and info on how to get it to / running on a PS2?

My Favourite emulators at the moment are (Probably in order of use - although WinUAE is only top because of the WHDLoad packs, not from playing games).

WinUAE (Can't find any info on this one...)

Mameox128 Plus! (Xbox Arcade emulator, plays all the oldies perfectly!)

FBA-XXX Pro (Xbox CPS1/CPS2/NeoGeo Emulator) - One of the best emulators on the xbox. I'd get this just for the Metal Slug games!

Zsnexbox (Xbox Snes emulator) plays everything I've thrown at it, inc. 4 player support & the NEW Zelda 3! (Parallel Worlds = awesome)

NeoGenesis (Xbox Megadrive emulator)

Mednafenx PCE (Xbox PC-Engine/Turbo-Gfx16 emulator)

WinUAEX (Xbox Amiga emulator) For when I can't be arsed to drag the Amiga out.

MekaX (Xbox MS/GG emulator)

Surreal64 xxx (Xbox N64 emulator) Plays 'some' games absolutely perfect.

NeoPopX (Xbox NeoGeo-Pocket Emulator) Only played Sonic on this but it's nice

I shall be grabbing a GBA emulator once I've got the above all working exactly as I want
