relokick etc vs real rom switcher

Hey all not sure if i have posted this in the right section but here goes anyway.

I have a REAL A1200 and am considering getting a rom switcher for 3.0/1.3 roms etc (maybe even ks1.2 for older games)

is there any pros and cons between the software route or the hardware route would the switcher do things the software option can't do???

I love Relokick and the last version i got even lets you switch between pal / ntsc display etc. But would the rom switcher give me any advantages.

Please put your 2p worth in and let me know what you think i'd start a poll but i don't really think it's worth that!

Especially AlexH he knows his stuff

I've never seen a romswitcher for the A1200 in the flesh. Almost all romswitchers support OCS/ECS machines only because they plug into or piggyback the one Kickstart rom slot that these machines have (and some have a clip that attaches to the Gary chip also). The A1200/3000/4000 all have 2 slots for Kickstart roms, so making romswitchers specifically for them was seemingly a harder proposition. Looking at the BBOAH it would seem that few were ever made for the A1200. This is the only one I found for the A1200:

http://www.amiga-hardware.com/showha...cgi?HARDID=675

In my experience using real Kickstart roms is always better than softkicking, but you may not have much of a choice with your A1200.

I have a rom switcher for the A1200 that accepts one wide set (two chips) for the 3.0/3.1 roms and then two extra sockets for narrow 2.05 and 1.3 chips.. :-)

I guess I ought to dig it out and sell it to someone who actually likes A1200s. :-D

Is there some chips? or just plain sockets and wires/jumpers?

It has some logic in it too, but I can't remember the details.. I'll try and find it when I'm at my warehouse next time.

It really depends on how much RAM / hard drive space you have.

If you have 2Mbyte chip RAM and no hard drive then a hardware KS switcher is recommended.

If you have 2Mbyte chip, 4+ Mbyte fast and a hard drive, the best thing is to use WHDload installed slaves off your hard drive instead of floppy disks.

I personally found most games that dont work on the A1200/A4000 with Relokick are ALSO dont work with a hardware kickstart switcher.

The reason is that you have the AGA chipset rather than OCS/ECS the game was programmed for and CPU caches which dont work with Self Modifying Code.

Save your money. Use WHDload where you can, where you cannot use a software degrader tool which switches off caches, remaps kickstart 1.3 and switches to OCS.

I am not sure what is the best "Degrader" software anymore.

Remember that your hard drive will not be available once you boot to 1.3 if it is an internal IDE or PCMCIA.

@alexh i always liked relokick best hence why i mentioned it! i tried others and didn't like them not to say they wheren't any good

so it looks like a combo of whdload and relockick the last time i had a rom switicher was on A500+, i had assumed they would still be popular on A1200 but maybe not!

relokick works just fine for me. Some games will never run on an A1200 like Lotus, but then A1200 has Roadkill!!!!
