Did it includes a 68-JIT ?
I dont hope you mean "UAE-E" .. did you ?!
Aros and running 68k Apps out of the box is not possible!
Or can I call "Vista" the next AmigaOS because it can run UAE ?!

Yes, it includes a 68k-JIT e-uae emulator (proper e-uae integration is on the way though).

I too, call Windows + WinUAE the best Amiga ever!

Well, I've tried (2) different Nvidia 5xxx graphics boards.

At first, I tried the "EVGA GeForce PCX5750 128MB 128-bit DDR PCI Express x16 Video Card".

It works with Amithlon (kern310 & drivers 0.90), but only when forced into VESA mode.

Next, I tried a "ASUS Extreme EN5900-TVD-128M PCX5900 Graphics Card".

I'm not sure why, but again, no joy. I could only get it to work in VESA mode.

1) Anyone have either of these two boards? And if so, were you able to get either to work in Video=Riva mode?

2) Can anyone recommend a good PCI-X video card that supports hardware acceleration, has at least one native DVI port, and of course, works with Amithlon?

FYI, I using an ASUS A8N-SLI SE NF4 motherboard. If PCX won't work, I suppose I could always look for a PCI based video card... I think I've seen FX5200 based PCI cards...

Thanks,
Dale

Hi,
Isn't Amithlon a pain to get working? Well worth it in the end IMO...

Now, GFX cards:
You are quite correct, for hardware acceleration you really need a GF 4/5 card as the most 'modern' you can get away with (I forget with regard to Matrox & ATI).

So what's the problem?
PCI-Express I'm afraid...
...the kernel recognises a GFX chipset by the card's internal ID code which generally is different in a PCIe card when compared to the AGP/PCI version. Even though the chipset may be identical to a known-supported AGP/PCI version because of that 'unexpected' ID it's not recognised so all you get is VESA.

What can be done?
1) Updated kernel that supports more than a very few PCIe cards. (not likely)
2) Get a mobo with AGP/PCI rather than PCIe. (a bit of a pain that)
3) Trawl Amithlon.open / 'net for one of the very few PCIe cards that 'might just work'.
4) See about using one of those GFX BIOS-Hacking utils to change the card's code to the PCI/AGP equivalent. (doable but very risky & may stop the card working with other OS's)
5) Put up with VESA - Yes I know it's very much slower than accelerated but still very much faster than any 'real' Amiga RTG system.

Oh, um DVI:
DVI isn't 'safe' under Amithlon. If it works for you (probably using a newer kernel) that's a bonus but don't expect it to even when the docs say it ought to...
...I've even seen a fully supported card with DVI & VGA-out seemingly work fine with the DVI-out only to realise using the DVI has flipped Amithlon to VESA mode & slowed things down - weird, eh..?

And the lesson is?
-If you want an easy life build your Amithlon Box with Athlon-XP era components carefully following the compatibility docs.
-If you want a 'more modern' setup it can be done but what works & doesn't is in the lap of the Gods...
...searching the Amithlon.open group for suggestions is a good idea.

-Don't give up hope: A fellow EAB member tells me he's got Amithlon working on a setup that in ALL regards should NEVER work - but it does!

How about this...

2Gb of Ram physically on machine with MEM=512M in GRUB. Works on this mobo but none of the others I have tried (4 so far) so basically shouldnt work

SATA drives - NO IDE - and SATA obviously enabled in BIOS. Nearly all mobos refuse with SATA apart from VIA and NForce SATA - this is Intel SATA?!!

Oh yeah, all with the ORIGINAL kernel (which doesnt support SATA). I have since switched to GC 3.10 mainly cos the Boing Ball works properly with that (whereas original gives a green border when loading).

Mobo? The Intel D945GCLF2... yup, that little mini ITX dual core Atom mobo!!! I think I have probably sussed which mobos will and won't work and had a C2D 3.2Ghz Amithlon machine as well....

I've not yet worked out how to install audio and LAN so the onboard LAN and Sound might not work but I have compatible PCI cards and the mobo can support a PCI riser and two cards.

Now I need some help in the actual Amithlon setup since I have compatible hardware. Volunteers?

BTW, I didnt like AmigaSYS for Amithlon. I think I prefer the OS 3.9 default look... but I'm kinky that way!!!

Methanoid,

What are you using for video? The onboard Intel 950? VESA output only?

Thanks,
Dale

yup, I think there are a lot of hangups about using VESA but TBH I am not aware of much an Amiga needs superfast 3D for... and VESA is generally faster than most actual Amiga RTG graphics cards

FYI, I tried a PCI based FX5500 and a PCI based FX5200.

Both cards worked just fine in Nvidia native mode.

And no problem at all using either cards DVI port.

Still, wish I could find a PCI based FX5900... Looked, but couldn't find any. If you know of one, send me the manufacturers name and the cards model number

I found an AGP version of the BFG Nvidia 5950 Ultra. Been using it for the past month. It works great! No problems with the DVI port.

Yes, I get the occasional 'flutter' of excitement... Hopes dashed again.

Oops, now I've gone & done it.
