Nobody has replied yet...

I haven't played it! Never even seen it before actually..

Why do you ask?

I have played it, albeit not too much, Starflight 2 happens to be my most favorite game ever. I had it many many moons ago on my real Amiga. I never had a real copy of Starflight though (I do own several hardcopies for several platforms now, but I didn't have one in the old days). At any rate, yes, I have played it, on an Amiga 500, an Amiga 1200 and in WinUAE (as well as other platform versions in other emulators, but I guess that's beside the point). I never quite got the hang of it, I'm probably just too fond of some of Starflight 2's new features (like the advanced trading, one of my most favorite activities in the game).

Hi, I’ve played Starflight a lot when I was a lad, it was one of my favourites!

I’d still like to play it now on WinUAE, but I’m having a problem with the ADF version I’m using. It’s a cracked version, and supposedly it should be all OK, but it isn’t. Every time you cross the Police vessels, they always attack you, it’s inevitable. Since I owned the original game for the Amiga years (and years and years and years) ago, I know this behaviour is due to the copy protection: in other words, if you were lacking the correct code, the game would apparently start with no trouble, but the Police would always kill you at your first space travel, preventing you from effectively playing. So you can understand it’s quite frustrating, I just HAVE the manual and the copy-protection wheel code, but I can’t enter it because of a faulty crack that won’t allow me to play because the Police destroys my vessel every single time!

So, I’m asking you… does someone have the original (copy-protected) version, or at least a well-cracked one? I’d be most grateful!

Thank you
GS

That's the version used in GameBase Amiga and hence good by definition.

DamienD, unfortunately my ADF file is simply called “Starflight.adf”, and I can’t remember where I got it nor who gave it to me. And, as if things weren’t bad enough already, I don’t even know how to retrieve CRC info about the version. Do I need some tool from Workbench? Sorry for my ignorance…

The only sure thing I can tell you is that the splash screen says “Cracked By PARANOIMIA on 12-14-89”, or something like that.

Thank you
GS

There are tools available that will tell you the CRC32 of files but probably the easiest way to work this out is to zip the file using WinZip or WinRAR and there's a column called CRC

Then it must be one of these:

... Starflight (1986)(Electronic Arts)[cr PNA].adf {CRC32: 3CB15C21}
... Starflight (1986)(Electronic Arts)[cr PNA][a].adf {CRC32: 76D5C485}
... Starflight (1986)(Electronic Arts)[cr PNA][a2].adf {CRC32: 38FE32E3}
... Starflight (1986)(Electronic Arts)[cr PNA][a3].adf {CRC32: 53E214FD}
... Starflight (1986)(Electronic Arts)[cr PNA][a4].adf {CRC32: 434DC5D5}

Anyway, this is now in The Zone! for you

... Starflight (1986)(Electronic Arts).adf {CRC32: DEF81769}

Thank you very much Damien, that’s very kind of you! I owe you one…

(And, by the way, I’ve tried to zip the ADF file, but the value in the CRC column – 603E152E – didn’t match any of the ones you provided… well, I think this doesn’t matter anymore now, does it?)

Thanks again
GS

The one DD posted in the zone is not marked as being cracked and so probably has the same problem.

When I added Starflight to GB Amiga, the paranoimia crack was the only one I had and it seems no one played it as no one ever reported it didn't work.

I should be able to put a cracked and working version in the zone soon.

You must have a version that isn't currently in TOSEC

ROFL

Ooops, the one I put in the Zone! isn't the one eLowar quoted

Anyway -GS- has the manual and the copy-protection wheel code so hopefully he'll get by

That would be the best option

well the pna vers are definitely all bad, the death angel crack could really do with more extensive testing but it certaintly works better than the pna crack.

it's also claimed to be v2.0 of the game.

Yeah, let's just wait for some more testing to occur first

This is the original, copy-protected version of the game, just what I was looking for. All seems to be OK, the game works properly, and when prompted for the key number (the first time you leave the Starport), my Code Wheel just does the job. See I was right about keeping that old Amiga stuff all these years? I knew it would come in handy someday!

If someone is interested, I can provide the codes (when I find a way to transcribe them without having to tear the Code Wheel down), unless Belgarath’s Death Angel version is 100% working (I haven’t tried it yet).

Thank you again

I'm sure scans already exist. I've also been meaning to take one of mine apart to scan it for a while now (I have many copies of the Starflight games ). The Death Angel version looks good, if you want to risk it, it would be nice if you could give it a test drive (to verify it's good for use in GameBase Amiga).

oh and this site got some interesting stuff

Quote:

Additional files & resources, wholly stolen from other Starflight sites:
[note- I have not tested these, use at your own risk]
  • Mapneg.gif - A Printable Starmap you can use to plot your journeys with.
  • starfrac.txt - List of races you encounter in Starflight and how to deal with them.
  • starfsol.txt - The quick and dirty list of things that need to be accomplished to finish Starflight.
  • starfobj.txt & starfob2.txt - Two different lists of objects and their locations in Starflight.
  • strinfo.zip - A huge MSWord document containing everything you ever wanted to know about starflight (everything!). Thanx go out to William Cassidy for this one.
  • starmapc.jpg - Starflight 1 starmap with important fluxes drawn in. Thanks to Cyberius Teaser.
  • S1mapgen.zip - Generates a customizable map for Starflight I. The program is fully configurable by editing a .CFG file. Thank you Dave Sheldon.
  • ulekill.zip - Cheat program for Starflight giving you fully trained humans, class 7 everything, and mucho endurium and cash.
  • starfpat.txt - Instructions on how to (manually) patch Starflight to work on EGA.
  • staremu.zip - A TSR enabling Starflight I to be played on a VGA card in 16 color! Big thanx to the author, Jouko Orava! Send him copious amounts of money. (This will only be needed for the real old version... games purchased since 1990 have this bug fixed).
  • stargrab.zip - Same as above, but now with screen capture abilities!
  • Cgaemu.zip - Another screen emulator. This one gives the original four-colour cga splendor back to the game, thanks to Dean Beeler.
  • sfwheel.zip - TSR to put in the Sarflight I code off the codewheel for you.
  • Starcode.zip - A snazzy windows version to compute the codewheel code for you.
  • starflightCodesJavascript.zip - Html + javascript version of the codewheel code generator. Either download and run it in your web browser, or simply use this one.
  • sf2sthnt.txt - Small Starflight II hint file just to start you off.
  • sf2colonizable.txt - A list of all colonizable planets in SF2.
  • starflig.txt - Complete walkthrough for Starflight II.
  • sf2ultimate.txt - The Ultimate SF2 listing. Shows all races' homeworlds and how to get all the important objects. Thank Lowar if you find it useful!
  • sf2doc.txt - Complete instructions for Starflight II (what? you don't have them?).
  • sf2crk.zip - Crack and Cheat program for Starflight II (even lets you edit your bank account!).
  • sficons.zip - A couple of windows icons for you to use to launch starflight, so you don't have to see the default MS-Dos one.
  • icde.zip - This comes with the Top Ten II pack, which comes with Starflight II; ICD.EXE disables your internal cache, slowing the Starflight games to a playable speed, and ICE.EXE re-enables the cache, speeding your computer back up again.
