The Settlers II: Next Generation

So, we have a Settlers II remake on the cards. And here are some screenshots:

http://www.tothegame.com/screenshot.asp?id=5268

I've never tried Settlers II, and it's supposed to be the best according to some. I am a big fan of the original, which I still play from time to time. I tried Settlers III and I wasn't hugely impressed, and it lacked the music and atmosphere from the first game. Settlers IV just didn't seem like much and Settlers V I didn't care to try because they left the cute graphics to gritty realistic styled graphics, which kinda removed some of the charm.

So, I've only tried the first and a tiny bit of the third. But this remake really look like the original but with better graphics, so I'm actually a little excited about this.

Let this be the official Settlers II: Next Generation thread then.

It certainly looks nice.. I love the original Settlers but never played any of the sequels.. If this plays like the original then I'll definately buy it.

Looks like Settlers V but with cartooney characters, and as I have Settlers V...

Settlers V did really badly despite the fact its amazing to play, looks fantastic and is excellent to play online!

Heres hoping that this one WILL retain the gameplay of the first Settlers of which took a big chunk of my life all those years ago.... I left this game in demo mode once for 24hours just to watch the game evolve... now thats sad when I think back!!

It looks good but I'm just not that bothered about all the 3d tomfoolery.

Well, seeing as it's a remake of Settlers II and not V, I'm guessing it will have a lot more in common with the original Settlers II than V. I don't know how much Settlers V shares with II, though.

I've just made a big gamble of buying The Settlers - Heritage of Kings for my PC yesterday... the first game I've bought for PC instead of PS2 for a change, and already I've been up half of last night playing the damn thing! Yeah - fab graphics, atmospheric sfx/music, etc. and a LOT to absorb in this version. But I'm finding fault with it already (maybe cos I'm spoilt with the Amiga one?!)....

No roads! - in the Amiga version, to me it made the whole "city" looked more realistic as your workers toddled along connecting roads.

Landscape generator - where the feck has that gone? Limited to a few custom ones.

No demo mode! - I used to love watching towns rise from the ground / battles being fought, etc. none of this in PC version.

Hey-ho - maybe I'm just nit-picking?! Or it could be that I'm getting old and prefer the simplicity of the Amiga version?

The latest release certainly sounds promising though and I'm REALLY hoping it retains the gameplay of the original Settlers.

Actually, Heritage of Kings haven't exactly been getting fantastic reviews, so I'm pretty sure you're feelings are well grounded.

Kind if explains why it only cost me 7 in Big W! I think curiosity got the better of me in this instance more than anything, let alone the "stunning" graphics. But to me it always comes back to playability over graphics at the end of the day. Think this verifies why I constantly return to Amiga Settlers and all the other classics. They don't make 'em like they used to!

Yes, Settlers 2 is actually the most popular, even with the most die-hard Settlers fans. And, while I haven't even tried Settlers 2 it's supposed to be the same as the original Settlers, but bigger and better. I, for one, am looking forward to it. May have to buy it, and that's probably the fourth or fifth pc game I buy this year. I don't buy many pc-games.

Yeah, it's been emulated perfectly I think, with Shapeshifter. But I'm not into emulation on the amiga.

I liked the demo (and a preview-version I got to play briefly), but I would have preferred a remake of the original instead. Settlers II is bigger, yes, but it isn't really better than the original. It feels slower, and not all the "new" elements are implemented as well as the core game. Besides, it lacks the all-important "random" map generator of the original. I want to settle new and unpredictable lands, not carefully designed and balanced levels.

One thing I definitely don't like with the new version (I can't actually remember if it the original Settlers 2 was like this as well) is how you can't make roads through forests. That, to me, seems like an artificial limitation that serves no other purpose than to complicate an aspect of the game that really doesn't need to be complicated.

Still, it's good that the classic Settlers-gameplay is making a comeback. I am definitely looking forward to playing it. Too bad they're not including split-screen two player. One would think that with todays USB-mice and all, it would be just as easy to set up a two-player game as it was on the old Amiga, but I suppose most developers don't even consider this option these days.
