Hello Everybody,

I want to say that Rocket Ranger was not banned in Germany but really censured : the nazi invasion was changed by an alien invasion.

See the end of this page : http://hol.abime.net/1269

I see the German box scan (front) has obvious Nazis on it, but the lapel rank badges and Headwear Swastikas have been removed

German

English

French missing the Headwear Swatikas.

Are there any screenshots from the German version demonstrating the in game differences?

Banned software

It is easy to get on the index, show one of the following:

Each kind of symbols that glorify or define down the nazi regime/time.
Short:Nazi-propaganda.

Misogynous software.

Excessive violence against human beings as end in itself.

Example: Once even Commando (C64) was banned coz you have killed humans after changing the human sprites into aliens it was officially sold
as Space Invasion.

[edit]
Btw:
There is indicated software like Doom which you can´t buy if
you are younger than 18.
And there is confiscated software (Wolfenstein 3d) which you can´t buy at all.

Eh, hope this is not too political.

BTW wasnt this the same game as Denaris?

Yep. The C64 original version,(converted to the 16bits),written by Manfred Trenz (of Turrican fame), was "substantially" changed & renamed Denaris, though I believe (at least acciording to an old Zzap! Interview with Manfred Trenz),the Amiga version was considerably less so,although still renamed as the above.

I lived in Germany (1992-1995) and played all of those 'censored' games. Had no idea I was doing something illegal. (I mean additionally to playing cracked/copied games. )

All games we're talked about so far wasn't really banned, they were indexed. That means the advertising for this games was not allowed, but people at the age of 18 had the possibility to buy the games "under the counter".

Here is a general information about the BPJM under which terms they can index or confiscate a computer game.

http://www.bundespruefstelle.de/bpjm...n-english.html

They confiscated games like Hitler Diktator or KZ-Mananger (C-64) for very understandingly reasons. The possesion of those games is really illegal in germany.

I always thought the removal from the shelves of Great Giana Sisters was an overreaction from Nintendo, and that they couldn't be that similar. That was until I played the game its mario but with a different character instead.

Most of the games were not forbidden:

You weren´t allowed to sell it to people younger than 18
You weren´t allowed to advertise it (including naming it in a magazine)

...that means that they were "indiziert" (put on a certain "index")

Only few games were forbidden ("beschlagnahmt")...I won´t name them here because I think that it was right to get rid of them....

Bomberman was banned in Ireland because it was a bad example for IRA fighters and rioters.

Go figure

Yikes!

There was a version in Germany of Rocket Ranger, though! They painstakingly changed all the baddies from Nazi's to Aliens! It was pretty silly!

A game called "Astaroth, Angel of Death" i know was banned, but im not quite sure if that was C64 or Amiga?.

Anyway, the reason why it was banned was due to the cover Art for the game which showed a HR Gigeresque Angel with Breasts. And yep as you guessed, the Breasts are why it was banned. Have a look at this picture.

I read today that Doom's ban has been lifted now in Germany, and the 'block' has been lifted on Steam downloads.

Germany’s Federal Department for Media Harmful to Young Persons (Bundesprufstelle) has removed Doom – and Doom II – from its list of ‘controlled’ games, following an appeal by id’s owners Bethesda. The reason stated Because the Bundesprufstelle thinks Doom is ‘now only of artistic and scientific interest and will not appeal to youngsters’
