Hmmm...
I'm an (ex)Amiga developer who wrote a driver @ some time in the distant past for hardware that probably is no-longer in prodution..?

- It can have no monetary value, as at best the file is an upgrade tied to existing hardware already sold. So surely any owners have a reasonable right to it...
- It must be so old/specialised that it can have no remaining intellectual value...
- The site itself is a non-profit service to the remaning Amiga community...

No, I don't get it...
Must be a self-centered egotistical moron.
Posting a more accurate description of the complainant would probably see me ejected form this board!

I'm wondering if it was a 3rd party driver for hardware. Not the free one that came with it, but a Feature rich accelerated one. That might make sense.

Although it is now freeware Ralph Babel's Guru ROM for the A2091 & GVP was still selling.
IDEMax still sells.

Why not just remove the driver?

Whoever complained is likely to be someone who at least occasionally frequents sites such as EAB and Amiga.Org. (It stands to reason if he was checking out BBOAh and if he wrote a driver for something).
Perhaps he should step forward and state his case.

& @ X-ray:

V. fair points:-

Still, surely a reasonable reaction to finding a legitimate site inadvertantly displaying your ip that is not 'free' would be to point out the mistake requesting it be removed - maybe replaced by an apology/explanation?
It seems there was more to this complaint than that.

Maybe I'm over-reacting but I've already seen far too much petty wrangling over ip during my short association with the Amiga to be calm...

Sorry
I'll stop now.

Update (Big Book of Amiga Hardware)
Thanks for all the support guys. It seems I need to clarify a few things :-). There have been many requests asking who issued the notice, however I feel this should be kept private. As far as I'm aware they do not work for any currently active Amiga related company. The offending driver was deleted immediately upon receiving the E-Mail however I chose to take down the entire site to review the content, in an attempt to avoid this happening again. I may also need to review how I handle submissions.
Some more explanation.

Even though I have a future project to create our own Amiga Hardware Archive
I could not as Alex H leech anything from the site ..not because it is down ...but because "ALL photo's & entries belong to its author"

While I plan also to mirror drivers etc those that require additional registration or purchase MUST be identified...if they change at a later date then that can be amended then.

Certainly the last comment about processing donated information is the most important part which is why it will take so long to create our in house version , as e-mails & verification checks will need to be made for each entry.

I fully sympathise with those who create sites for community good only to find themselves later targeted "For making a mistake or two "..sometimes it is NOT the original creator who causes these upsets , but cash minded individuals who aquire the rights as part of a "Block Deal " on other things & starts a searh based on all the individual parts of their newly aquired assests.

While they know they cannot make money by selling & releasing these parts for sale a legal action can be worth substantialy more..the rest you will see happening a lot more frequently....particularly if they ever make a 1200 joystick to tv device in the next 5 years.

The resources that we use as abandonware games for both WHD load & WinUAE will suddenly recieve the worst kind of interest

Um, I kind of fucking RELIED on this site to fix my and other people's machines.

I've heard of people charging seperately for drivers for later homebrew Amiga stuff (wasn't there a USB card or somesuch that suffered from this?), but as far as I know the site didn't post any of that crap anyway. So what the hell?

Perhaps what the site needs is to be sponsored and hosted by a commerical Amiga friendly entity. If the site is not too big DiscreetFX volunteers to be that company. We would handle any future complaints and free the designer of the site, Ian in this case of any worry since complaining companies would come to DiscreetFX, not him for complaints if any. Why would DiscreetFX do this? We think this site is a valuable resource and have used it many times ourselves, we don't want to see it die. DiscreetFX would charge nothing for providing this service to the Amiga community and Big Book of Amiga Hardware.

Best regards

-DiscreetFX Team

I would recommend for the time being, that you archive any of this kind of data onto a more permanent media then a HD, say CD-R or DVD-R just to make sure you don't lose this info

Once this gets sorted out then hey, you can u/l it to the appropriate site or sites

Well since we are due to start asking for donations of manuals for our own inhouse AHA database post it here

amigamanuals@googlemail.com

As that is the colection point for the manuals prior to the aforementioned checks
For EABs base each donation will be sent to a different storage account to ensure

1]It doesn't go missing
2]Any errors can be verified { we all know translated pamphlets can have typo's }
3]It makes it easier to make a new PDF copy if there is a problem

But I am NOT forcing you gizmomelb

As a qualified tight bastard, instead of donation, would it be possible to offer some time to the project, collecting information, html/PHP/MySQL/XML programming?

Afterall time is money?

I do have a vast collection of Amiga stuff, combined with BuZz of eXotica who lives round the corner from me, plus a good knowledge of Amiga stuff, and I am a hardware designer.

I think the HOL is a work of ART! Other attempts, (EAGER, Gage etc.) although great do not come close. CodeTappers forthcomming Magazine Database looks amazing too! I just know that AHA will be amazing.

Of course knoledge & time are just as precious a donnation as original data Alexh

Which is why such a long time is being taken making sure the sites database engine is not only websafe & useable by EVERYBODY but also that it still looks the part.

Secondly its structure is such that data entry HAS to be a single entry format so that as each new entry is made it auto intergrates,to save the VALUABLE time of those compiling it.

All compilers will build it a section at a time & by having a central collection point for the raw data it allows for the prevention of TWO people ending up working on the same entry & reduction of duplicated effort.

Because this is NOT a deadline project there is NO presure to give more time than you have available or are willing to give.

The front end database should be available to view before new year as the current webmaster Binox is still tweaking code BUT promises to put up the MKI demo soon. So certainly constructive critisism at that point would be useful
