Any Platform games today?

Hi everyone. I was just wondering if anybody out there still creates platform games. I'd really to like to play a good platformer on the pc with enhanced gfx and some brilliant music. It could be a 5-year old game, I don't mind. But I don't mean 3D games with "rotating camera views" and ... "holo-scopic gaming areas" but the good-ol' 2D platformer, possibly with nice+smooth multi-lateral scrolling and no distracting graphical effects. Something along the lines of Superfrog, New Zealand Story, Rainbow Islands and so many others we know and love on the Amiga. Any suggestions?
And while we are at it, why most people today don't play 2D games any more?

Try "Save the Sheriff" at miniclip.com, a Shockwave game. It's not really representative of the great things Shockwave can do, but it's cute and well made.

Otherwise, I think your best bet for nice-looking platformers would be to get a new console or hand-held.

People don't play 2D games today because they think it's boring, which is wrong. What's boring is yet another first person shooter with a billion polygons made to look like concrete and rusty metal and crates and other inspiring constructions... they all look the same and you do the same things in every one of them, but they sell by the cartload. Oh well.

Thanks, it's very nice. Exactly what I was looking gameplay-wise, but it certainly cannot compare to Amiga platformers when it comes to gfx+audio. I particularly enjoyed the "stomp-on-baddies" effect (reminded me of Robocod and Lupo Alberto [still won't work on winuae]) and the 'remember-jump' feature. Meaning when you're holding the up/jump button, the character won't mindlessly jump all the time, but only jump once, if you pressed the jump button again, when in the middle of a... jump. Always loved that, a healthy sign of a clever platformer.

Don't want to do that, really. And a hand-held, , the essential sense of exploration in platformers is totally lost in that minute screen.
This is probably the sort of thing I'm looking for: Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure

Cave Story ~ Doukutsu Monogatari

One of the best platformers I have ever played, all in a small file, and totally free. Pure class.

Interesting but what the ..? I can't get past the first screen. How do I enter that door?

And anyway, isnt' out there, a fully-fledged, probably commercial, flagship platform game ?

Yes, there *IS* one, and it could have been from UBI Soft or maybe EIDOS (?)
The hero looks a little bit like the Ruff 'n Tumble sorta kid character, and the game feels like some 3D Ruff'n Tumble thing.

But the name escapes me at the moment, sorry.

You should consider buying a Gameboy Advance (or the new f*****' cute Gameboy Micro http://micro.gameboy.com/). It is a perfect platform for platform games Hundereds of *brand new* oldskoolish games (and still counting) even a few Amiga conversions (James Pond 2, Soccer Kid).

I do not recollect any good 2D platform games released recently for the PC market but at least you can find some interesting stuff on Playstation2 and Gamecube consoles:

Thanks to all for replying.
Rgen: Lomax looks nice, but if it's similar to Flink I won't like it. Too slow. And it's on a console. But it'll probably be much better than Flink so.. what the nicest PSX emulator.... ?
weasel_ch: You've got it man! Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee looks like the thing!
plasmatron: Skull Monkeys sounds interesting although I couldn't find any screenshots. And it's on PSX. On the pc there's the older Neverhood, related to Skull Monkeys.
andreas: I don't like 3D games !!!! 3D platformers = sacrilege
galu: Aaargh, handheld consoles, crappy controllers, tiny screen. Definitively not for the 'explory' type platformers... The PS2 / Gamecube games look great, and probably play great too, but I really don't want to risk entering the console area 'cause I'll get sucked into never-ending gaming again, and I don't have the time for that anymore...

I'm going to try locating Pitfall:The Mayhan Adventure and Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee for starters. Let's hope they'll run fine on XP cause I've had my fair share of 'degrading' on the Amiga. Wouldn't want to do that all over again...

There's a Windows version (that's the one I have) but if you don't like Flink I think you don't have fun with it either.

The Claw is Our Master...

There's the often overlooked "Captain Claw" (sometimes called just "Claw") platformer that Garrett Price designed and Monolith put out around the time they were doing the 3d mecha-robot game "Shogo" (one of the easter-egg items in Shogo was a Captain Claw doll that would drive your opponents insane with its witty retorts).

Claw is obstensively old-school. 2D, baby, with hand-drawn sprites, and a level editor to boot!

Review:

It's probably abandonware by now. Last I checked, there was a "Real Arcade" release of it, but I think it's passed into obscurity as well.

I too am always on the lookout for quality platform games - especially 2D.
Since I bought a peecee in 1995 I have played a couple of good 2D games designed for this machine:
Duke Nukem Manhattan Project (2001): it is pseudo-3D and one of the few games I actually finished without cheating. Last weekend I saw this game for only 2 Euros at a toy shop.
Super Drake (not sure about the title) (1997): starring a muscled blue duck in a multiscrolling platform affair. Very reminiscent of Earthworm Jim.
Jazz jackrabbit 2 (1998) is the best of the lot. Very much Sonic-like.

I too am a 90% plattform player... the rest 10% is reserved for rpg's ... I think that jazz jackrabbit 1 is way better than it's sequel...
also have a look at Dangerous Daves 1,2 and 3 (from ID software!) very cool EGA plattforms!

Wanderer - PSX emulators give these a try:

PSXeven ---> http://batard.psxfanatics.com/
SSSPSX ---> http://www.ssspsx.com/

Both require a bios file to run which isn't supplied but google will help you with that
