Peter Molyneux OBE

Call of honour for UK games maker

Leading British computer games maker Peter Molyneux has been made an OBE in the New Year Honours list.

The head of Surrey's Lionhead Studios was granted the honour for services to the computer games industry.

Mr Molyneux has been behind many of the ground-breaking games of the last 15 years such as Populous, Theme Park, Dungeon Keeper and Black and White.

He is widely credited with helping to create and popularise the so-called god-game genre.....................

Why is the Commodore being sold (again) story still in the News section then?

I still don't understand.

To me this is more Amiga news than any AmigaOne (which isn't an Amiga) bullshit.

Who cannot agree that the guy who made Populous isn't an Amiga icon ?

Doesn't deserve one, Curse Fable into oblivion...utter rubbish...all style and no content.....

Populous, Theme Park and Dungeon Keeper are his best games.

Black & White over hyped piece of rubbish like MGS2.

Well done to him. Some great games came out of his stuff.

Still think other people in the UK should have got some too though but It's not his fault for that.

I've re-moved it to Retrogaming General Discussion; the news isn't contemporary Amiga news and as such cannot be placed in the 'News' forum, however it is relative to retrogaming in general and considering the usual themes of off-topic it would be better placed here.

I wasn't joking about his name meaning that in Japanese by the way.

If this the first honour for such a person or was Clive Sinclair given something but in a different field?

What's the difference between MBE and OBE btw? OBE forces everyone to address you as 'sir'?

OBE is better. Officer of the British Empire, rather than "mearly" a Member of the British Empire. Neither entitle you to be named "Sir", that can only be used with a knighthood, i.e. a KBE (Knight Commander) or GBE (Knight Grand Cross). All of these are an "Order of the British Empire", just different levels.

As far as what exactly each mean, I have no idea.

Only a Kinghthood allows you to be called "Sir" although my local Butcher calls me "Sir".

Everything else is mere letters after your name...

I tend to agree with that sentiment. I've always found just about all of Molyneuxs games to be extremely overhyped - even the better games in his resume don't live up to the hype generated prior to release.

Black & White and Fable are excellent examples of this imo. B&W was supposed to be a genre defining game, the hype was palpable prior to release, and what did we get? Basically a cross between Populous and Powermonger with some elements of Zoo Keeper thrown into what was a very, very ordinary game.

The hype around Fable was even worse, and Molyneux happily contributed to it (as he almost always did) by telling anyone who'd listen that it would be the greatest RPG ever. Now, I've only started playing it recently, and it is an interesting game, but it a hell of a long way short of being an all time classic, never mind the master of its genre.

I will applaud Molyneux for one thing though - he is almost always trying to be original with his releases, something all to rare in his profession.

@Scatter - Yep Agreed, give him a point for originality and another for Dungeon Keeper. I loved the intro sequence to DK - The Original Release not the Re-Release. It's funny, the skeletons rush in to combat. With their weapons drawn they look at Horny to say...Yes Master we will kick ass.. Absolutely Fantastic. The intro music is good too, the music is like trying to say...Get'em!! One of the best Intro sequences along with FFVIII.

Fable..How long did it take...4 years...right....So what did you actually implement, Oh...just wasteful code where you don't really do anything. Oh did I not mention it is only 8-10 hours long and the easiest pile of toffee-nosed crap the Earth has ever seen. I wish Pete was in the game, I'll marry him and chop HIS head off..and then maybe something else ...Oh, Hello Pete nice game....

Best Feature: The Graphics, it really is like a fairytale...

So Pete if we gave you 8 years could you add some extra knobs on?

"He was lauded (and awarded a knighthood) by Margaret Thatcher's government for leading what was seen as a renaissance of British industry, but was seen in other quarters as offering only skin-deep solutions to Britain's industrial malaise"
