How come we don't have a nice mag site like this one?

Cool, thanks but I think that http://www.atarimagazines.com/ is more than just an index of mags.

It surprises me that with all the hard work and dedication Amiga users put into projects like HOL, APoV, WHDLoad etc, there isnt a project to preserve complete magazines.

For me, magazines are almost as much a part of the whole Amiga experience as the games.

This is surely a worthy cause.

Neither of those sites are of any interest to me as they arent in English.
I was referring to mags like Amiga Power, CU Amiga, Amiga Format etc.

As for contributing, firstly I dont have any of my old Amiga mags and secondly I dont own a working scanner.

Do me a favour in future Kodoichi, reply to ANYONE else but me eh? I cant fuc*ing stand you or your replies

So this is what's left from the idea of creating a legal site with scanned magazines...?

Fortunately, I was able to get the permission from two publishers. I also have enough webspace and a suitable domain. Sometime in 2005 I'll start to set up a legal site, but very likely with scans of german magazines only.

Who are these two publishers and what are the likely titles of the magazines?

Maintaining a site with Amiga reviews can be very unrewarding. You constantly have to keep in mind you are doing it for your own sake or the Amiga community in general. It takes lots of time to scan in the pages (or, with my site, OCR them to HTML), the paperquality of the mags goes quickly downhill and the number of visitors you get on your site is less than 10 people a day.
For my site, my purpose is having OCRed ALL Amiga-gamesreviews of the magazines I own, although if I stumble upon a scanned Amiga review on the Net I convert it to HTML. At the moment I think I've covered 80% (over 2000 reviews) of my magazinecollection.

@Peanutuk,
Didn't you start an initiative putting Amiga Power reviews online? I think it was great.

Scanning a mag of 140 pages takes around 5-6 hours of repetitive work, besides real-life, some light Tosec contribution, throwing away and selling mangas, school, get some fresh air, converting old VHS tapes to Mpeg/DivX, buying food, going to the toilet and lots of other things.

I came up with the idea, I realized it even if it's not quite what I had in mind and now somebody - probably the one that's currently downloading an issue and will add this one to his own site - is complaining. Hooray.

Since a certain guy closed the GAEB, I lost sight of people that could contribute or help me out otherwise.

So, have you started scanning them already? Or do they shove you all the issues in PDF-format up your ass?

@Tim I did and I have been re-working it with the help of Woody. The main problem is space (as scans can be rather large) and time. It takes a bloody age to scan in a 130+ page magazine and it is extremely tedious to say the very least. I usually have to do it with a drink in one hand and the football on so I don't think too much about it.

I also know what you mean by motivation. Obviously I have the magazines, so the only reward is to make them available for others, but when, as you say, few people visit on a daily basis and bad-users attempt to destroy bandwith by leeching, motivation can dwindle.

Anyway I have continued to work on the site with the intention of making it more than just a scan site so the scanned content isn't the be-all-and-end-all. Unfortunaterly though I'm run of my feet at the moment to the extent that I'm currently pencilling in time to poo, so I can't say when it'll be up. Sooner rather than later though.

I didn't talk about any of these things... I know how much work it is. I was talking about that site, which is only a collection of eDonkey links and that's just a poor leftover of the original idea.

Of course. I've scanned 23 magazines so far. (~2500 pages, 1.3 GB)

Yes, I'm still scanning. I don't need help right now but possibly when the site goes online.

Yes this is true. I didnt know of these projects and I didnt word my original post very well I admit. However, as per usual your reply was sarcastic and annoying with a sneering tone.

So this thread doesnt degenerate any further I will send YOU the rest of what I was going to write in a PM.

This is a useful thread but if it degenerates into name calling it is hardly going to encourage anybody (including myself) into investing a great deal of time and effort into providing something for the community.

Let's stop the name calling and bitching and spend our time thinking about how to best implement our ideas.

What would be handy is a scanner bigger than A4, certainly make scanning in the larger magazines easier. Anyone know of any cheap quality big scanners?

@Windowskiller - Fair enough!

Huh.
"Unfair" enough that not anyone of your German-speaking people has ever bothered to mention Kultpower in this thread. They really do deserve being mentioned. Can't seem to think of a better-designed site regarding this topic.

- to you English guys: the site is great: even though you might not understand a word, the pictures are great anyway

But you can't download full magazines from Kultpower, only particular reviews. And then you should mention http://www.kultboy.com as well.
