Contributing to hol - Giana Sisters

Hi There.

Just like to say that you really don't make it easy for people to contribute images! I'm a big retro games player, into all formats (not specifically Amiga), and came across hol while looking up some amiga game info prior to selling them on eBay. As a game fan, I'm happy to contribute to sites like this, but found it really difficult to do so with hol. I couldn't find any way to do so from the site, and eventually had to join this forum.... only to be told if I don't submit 10 posts I could be kicked out!

It seems you are trying really hard to put off anyone who is not a hard-core amiga fan from contributing.

Anyway, rant over, I have just scanned the disk and box art for the original 1987 'The Great Giana Sisters' game. How do I pass it over to you guys? I tried attached a small version to this post, is that ok? Assuming you want it that is... i saw you don't have these images on the appropriate page in hol.

You can upload high resolution pic over our FTP at:
server / user / pass = ftp.abime.net / hol / incoming
(create one folder with you nickname)

Hi KnightOfNi

This game is on the Wanted list over at the Classic Amiga Preservation Socitey - http://www.caps-project.org/wanted.shtml
Would you be kind enough to write-protect the disk a.s.a.p., and contact the CAPS team?

Thanks madenph. Yes, this game is extreamly rare even in modified form (hiscore saves). Finding one that has not had its hiscores saved has so far proved impossible. If it is in any way possible you could help us preserve this game, it would be *very* much appreciated!

If you can help us in this, please send me an email or PM and I will help you do what is needed to dump the disk.

Thanks in advance!

I've added a black background to the disk, cleaned it up, recoloured the label and resized it and it's now online. The box scan is too small and needs to be redone at a higher resolution to fit in with the HOL standards.

The 'box scan' is a 3-way fold-out which is longer than A4, so doesn't fit on my scanner. Do you want two separate scans, or should I stitch them together (as I did with the low res version)? I think I have some other bits you may want, as I have the originals for Giganoid, Deflektor, NightBreed and Drakkhen.

Scan them in parts please - as long as each of the folds is on it's own section and at least 640 pixels wide, that'll be fine...

Replied

And thanks for the help! It would be wonderful to finally get an unmodified copy of this game! In the mean-time, please don't play it with the disk write enabled.

Hmmm... this looks complicated!
I have the A1200, but it was a no-hdd version. So I guess I have to connect it to the PC, but have no cable to do so... I'll have to ask around. (I only play these things, I don't know how they work!)

If all else fails there are always caps contributors who would be willing to dump the game for you, there may even be someone local to you so you wouldn't have to send it in the post.

Well, I'm in Bristol and happy to take it somewhere locally.
I don't trust the post though :/
I have a mate going to look around work tomorrow for a likely looking cable.....

If you have WorkBench 3 disks:

Perhaps it can be dumped into RAM first, then transferred over to the PC using cross-dos and floppy disks. Fiath will have to clarify, I'm not sure how the dumping works.

You'd need at least 4Mb of RAM to dump to RAM.

Yeah, its not a walk in the park, but it shouldn't be too difficult. The large amount of documentation isn't because dumping is complicated, just so people have a step-by-step guide.

BTW if you have a Windows XP machine you will probably want to get the serial null modem cable rather than the parallel one. It is much (much) slower, but there does not seem to be the incompatibility problems of using a parallel port under XP.

Thanks for persevering!

Yes, and please UNCOMPRESSED if possible!
Only then it will be possible to resize with no quality loss.

@KnightOfNi:
could you contact me at my "junk address" trashcan@sinkut.com so we can finally get those scans into HOL? Thanks!
