Reading PC discs

Hi,

I have 2 Amigas (1200 & 600) and a PC with many adf files on it. My aim is to transfer the adf's onto Amiga disks for use on my Amiga.

I have Read the guides on the ALE web page and downloaded all of the software. I have succesfully completed the PC side of things by compressing the adf with LHA and copying it to a 720kb formated floppy.

As the guide states I have loaded workbench 3.0 up and opened a shell and typed the command:

MOUNT PC0:

to read the PC disk.

However I have tried this on 2 different Amigas with workbench v2-3 and it simply dosen't work, saying that it can't find something on the workbench disk.

This is driving me nuts.

Any clues anyone.

Thanks.

Is your workbench setup on a harddisk or run from floppies? Workbench 3 has got PC disk support, though some Amigas will not read 1.4 MB floppies.

Have you transferd the files in the dos driver files in the storage directory to the devs directory on workbench. The files are pc0: and pc1: if you've done this the workbench should read the pc disks automatically. Have you ever though of using whdload to put the games onto your hard drive. Its much better and faster. Whdload is what amiga hard drives were made for.

Are you sure you have CrossDOS? In your Amiga 600 with 2.0 you surely don't.

In your 1200, try typing "mount PC0: from devs:pc0". See what happens

This won't work. There is no PC0 in DEVS: and if it was, there is no PC0 entry in it. If you want to use the "from" keyword, it has to point to a text file in mountlist format. DosDrivers are not in mountlist format (although it looks very similar).

If you don't have a HDD, the PC0 driver is on the Storage disk. Insert the Storage disk, open its icon, open DosDrivers and double click on PC0. It will then ask for the Workbench disk. Insert it and wait for disk activity to finish. If you now insert a new disk into the internal drive, two icons should apear for it: one for Amiga format and one for PC format. One of these is ghosted as the disk cannot have both formats at the same time.

Too right, I was used to the old 2.05 way. Thanks for clearing that up.

Can i use Workbench 3.0 from the Amiga 1200 on the 600 to use the PC0 driver in the Storage disk to read PC disk to transfer files over to the amiga 600...?

It worked on the emulator(winUae)...

Note: that version of CrossDOS only handles DOS 8.3 filenames (you need CrossDOS 7 if you want longer filenames (32 char limit)). It will still work, but names will be truncated, or use the Win95 short 8.3 file name mappings (with the tildes in the filename).

Ah I never knew that crossdos 7 supported longer filenames...

Interesting... will look into this...

Can it be used in the exact same way as the crossdos on wb3.X, just mounting the devices and such?

It's still being sold isn't it?
