The Game of Life

Final request for the night/morning and I am going to sleep. Here's a game you see a lot of in the PD world, but it seems a commercial version appeared as well...

Currently I do not know a PD game called "Game of Life", but the Linel game "Game of Life" was probably never distributed as shareware/PD. It was a normal commercial game programmed by Michael Assel and Joerg Dengscherz.

There were (are) MANY PD/Shareware games called GAME OF LIFE, on various Platforms but in THIS case you´re right, THIS one´s not a PD/Shareware game !

I wanted to say with my posting that the PD game and the commercial game are not the same. There were many PD games which were put in a box and were sold as full price games by dubious companies. (but here it is not the case!) Best example: The German companies Markt & Technik and sometimes also CT Verlag.

I'm glad you brought that up, Bernd. I have often wondered about those two companies...especially CT Verlag (also publishers of German Amiga mags and a few European versions of mags.) So the games with their name attached they didn't have real licensing to release commercially? My guess was always that they paid the writers of those games to publish them on coverdisks (and in some case independently, like Crazy Sue for example).

Is it possible that these games that they published on coverdisks they actually had/have the rights to, but they got spread after appearing there and everyone just assumed them to be PD/SW? I have seen this happen lots of times where commercial games were spread and believed to be freeware, so I figured it might be possible here.

Can anyone confirm these fuzzy details? Particularly our German friends may know more about this.

I don't think Mart & Technik would do such a thing. I don't know Cp Verlag very well so I'll talk about M&T only.

They used to sell lots of cool C64 stuff back then, and they were the official german distributors of GEOS. Such a big company wouldn't risk it, would they? *anything is possible in thsi crazy world )

I never seen any Mart & Technik amiga software. Any titles I should know of?

I can't say whether they paid the authors. For instance it is a fact that CT Verlag had 'Jagt den Calippofresser' and 'Elefanten' on their 20DM magazines. Both were PD/advertising games and could be obtained for a quid from every PD library. You also mention 'Crazy Sue' which I think is also on Aminet, isn't it? I am
really not sure whether it is PD. Illegal software on Aminet? I think the game was spread by so many people, so everybody thought it is actually PD. Anyone who has a text from the author which says that the game is freely distributable?
I really think that your theory could be right in some cases...

@Akira
You mean CT Verlag and not CP Verlag, don't you? CT means Computec. I am sure you have heard of this..
And Markt & Technik: Yes, they also sold non-pd games, but I am sure that they sold PD games for the price of normal budget software (please don't ask me for examples).
Some M&T Amiga games you should know:
- Warlords
- Zargon
- Blasteris
- Block Out
- Highway 42
- Nautilus (don't mix up with the 2D PD game Nautilus; this is a 3D game)
- Hiscon Rescue
- Regnum
...

I attached two 'box' scans of two M&T games. This time no PD, but their PD games had a similar box.
BTW: Nautilus is GREAT. Imo better than Silent Service:-))

Yes, there is more of this kind. I would like to attach more scans, but in many cases I only have the original disks left but not the covers
The last M&T Amiga scan I provide is from "Software Extra Nr. 12". The price of 49,-- DM was quite high. A reason why these games are even rare in Germany. Btw: The price of a title in the GameBench series was 79,-- DM.

"Calippo-Fresser" is already in TOSEC ... I too needed a second glance to spot it...

Well, I only found this old thread by doing a word search for the above term.
You got the Elefanten game?
Cool! Haven't played this for ages...liked to get my fingers on it again.

Ah..
Do you know when you can consider yourself REAL good?

If you manage to find L & M Adventure by Philip Morris, also an advert game.
That is gonna be a hard one, trust me.

Be a winner at the game of life,
Have fun, going crazy
Get married, have a baby
All of you can find romance
All your dreams can come true-oo
Be a winner at the ga-ame of life.

The Game of Life

Did I get the lyrics right?

Have I finally cracked? Well, anyone who remembers the advert will know what I'm on about.
