On the Amiga (at least),I believe that title might actually go to Prince of Persia.

Look at that dot somewhere in between the second and the third mountain. A F*CKING DOT!!! I wonder what the thalion developers where thinking back then!!! All they had in mind was how to make trees straight and missed that dot...

I particularly don't like the blue shade they chose for the background. It's a frecking blue sky. Who ever heard of that.

I'd say Super stardust's sprites were the best. Lionheart is my king of the backgrounds and flashback has got to have the best flowing animation of characters. I loved the way you could draw your gun, crouch, roll over an edge to drop down behind an enemy, turn around to face enemy while he's turning, raise your gun into aiming position and fire. It's just great.

Out of this world (http://hol.abime.net/?id=2328)had some nice animations too. I still like the part where you get picked up and shaken around a bit, kick the guard who drops you, run over grab gun turn and fire as well. But flashback still gets my vote for best motion.

Problem is you can't have everything. Something is sacrificed to make room for something else.

Personally I was impressed by alien breed 2's graphics as well (http://hol.abime.net/?id=3233). Clean stylised graphics without too much rastering or imitation of detail. At least none which failed to work and just ended up annoying the eye instead.

Graphical achievment works in different ways.

For example a 16 colour game compared to a 32 colour game, developers sometimes sacrifised graphics for speed and gameplay!

saying x looks better than y simply because y only uses 16 cols and doesn't looks so good (Xenon2, Gods both 16 cols) is like comparing AGA to ECS (main diff is num of colours!)

Darkseed ( http://hol.abime.net/?id=273 )looked excellent, but the interlace gfx give me a bloody headache after 5 minutes

Games which stand out to me are the usuals, Turrican2, Gods (http://hol.abime.net/?id=2754), Pinball Illusions( http://hol.abime.net/?id=1059 ), Slamtilt ( http://hol.abime.net/?id=1972 ), Settlers ( http://hol.abime.net/?id=1878 )etc.. but the best I think is Flashback..

The amount of effort that would have gone into making it look the way it does must deserve credit, all the acting/rotscoping etc, the game plays smoothly and fluidly, the backdrops of the various locations are simply gorgeous etc...

Flink on CD32 looked good also!

the first game that really blew me away with cool graphics was BarbarianII on the miggy... (http://hol.abime.net/?id=37) "damn look at that sky... it almost looks real! Nowadays it takes a lot more than 3 different colors on a sky to impress the kids

A few of my favourites:

Disposable Hero (ECS)
http://www.classicgaming.com/shmups/...osablehero.htm
You have to click on the level links below to see the screenshots. Too bad they haven't got any animations there, as those were really what made the game stand out)

Super Stardust (AGA)
http://hol.abime.net/?id=2212

Ruff 'n' Tumble (ECS)
http://hol.abime.net/?id=1292 (one screenshot)
http://www.retrogaming.it/amiga/ruffntumble.htm (several poor screenshots - lousy colours)
Again, it was the animations that really made me drool. Superb stuff.

How 'bout infocom games? No?

Believe it or not I've always loved the graphics of every sierra and lucasfilm/arts title. I know you'll hate me after this confession

When I saw screenshots of BloodMoney I got really impressed, better graphics than coin ops!! Actually game likes me, but in that time when I got an amiga and a copy of the game I was a bit dissapointed for the gameplay.

Respect, Barbarian2.. I got impressed when change disk sequence.. amazing.

Unreal wasn't impressive at all. Those flying sections really did nothing for me. As for Turrican 2, I never played it!

And Bloodmoney did nothing above create a decent shooter with average gfx.

Disposable Hero was awesome for OCS/ECS as was Project-X and Ruff'n'Tumble and Flashback (Amazing animation bar none)

Sorry but Agony was extremely underwhelming. The character was awesome but the background and enemies where awful. Talk about dull, coolourless sprites! And as for Beast, yeah it looked good, but the play was so repetitive repetitive repetitive that it sat back in my mind while I played games such as Alien Breed and Faerytale!!!!

Very impressive protection too

But my my vote goes to Fire and Ice:
http://hol.abime.net/?id=548

Absolutely fantasic AGA-level graphics on an OCS machine. And the gameplay just rocks.

Ahh yes Fire and ice is a great looking game too. I never made it past the ice levels though so there really wasn't that much wow in the background.

The question was 'what was the best looking game'.... playability doesn't enter the equation!
