another null modem question

Hoping someone can help

I am trying to connect an Amiga 1000 (KS1.3 no hard drive) to my XP PC using a serial cable I just bought and workbench 1.3 and Amiga Forever.

The A1000 has a female serial port

So I bought a "D25F-D25M Straight through Serial Modem Cable"

and have a DB25 to DB9 reducer on the PC end

the cable i got is sealed so i can not inspect the wiring.

if someone can please tell me where i've gone wrong and what type of cable i need to get.

Sorry I know this has been asked b4 I have searched the Board with no straight forward answer to my question.

Your serial cable needs somewhere along the line the TX (tramsmit) and RX (receive) wires swapped around to become what is known as a 'null' modem cable/crossover cable/laplink cable.

It sounds like you have a normal serial cable (straight through) and also a straight though gender converter on the A1000.

Another test would be to attach your PC to a modem using your cable and see if you can communicate with it - if you CAN then that cable is a standard modem/serial cable and not a 'null' modem cable/crossover cable/laplink cable which is what you need.

thanks gary

thought it was a bit too cheap to be a laplink

is there a difference between laplink or null modem cables?

does anyone know if gender converters or db25 to db9 reducers cause any problems when connected to a true laplink cable?

thanks again

No. 'Laplink' is a name that more salespeople may be aware of these days - just make sure you specify a SERIAL laplink cable.

No. they *should* be straight through which is the same as extending the cable.

Code:
NULL modem cable:

   tx rx gnd
   | | |
    \ / |
     \ / |
      X |
     / \ |
    / \ |
   | | |
   tx rx gnd

Gender converter or
modem cable:

   tx rx gnd
   | | |
   | | |
   tx rx gnd

For the fastest serial connection, you should really get a "7-wire" cable - this has 7 pins connected, as opposed to the usual 3. I'm not sure what the pinouts are, though - you'll have to Google for that yourself.

I ended up taking that serial cable back to the shop

I went to my parents house and fished thru all my old pc junk I did manage to find an old laplink cable (parallel)...doh!!

I've read thru some of the faq's on eab and have found i should be able to achieve some kind of connection by hooking them up thru the parrallel ports. I'm gonna see an old freind tomorow he will transfer the programs i need to floppy, so hopefully it should work. if not i'll go and buy a serial laplink null modem cable Ive already got the gender converter so I'll see how I go.

thanks for your help guys

looks like laplink (parallel) is not gonna work on a 1.3 system because PC2Amiga needs kick 2.0

So I'm gonna have to get a serial null modem lead

Its a shame Amiga Explorer doesnt support parallel

Oh well back to the computer shop tommorow hope they dont sting me too much
