GQ2 Final Released
Hello Friends
I have finally finished my adventure game Geo's Quest "In Search of Queen Lorraine" that I started way back in December 2000. I worked on it until early 2002 but didn't finish it because of life commitments, so I uploaded the incomplete, full of errors version to Aminet back then in hopes another GRAC2 developer would finish it. Alas no one did. I retired in the fall of 2021 and in early 2022 resurrected my old projects, this one & GQ3 (I uploaded that unfinished version to Aminet last year) I have completely reworked, rewritten, corrected, refined and completed GQ2 and it is done (I think). I uploaded the Final version today to Aminet, so it should be available over the next couple of days. Please note: it is a chip ram hungry game (upwards of 1.5mb at times) so I encourage you to read the included guide for hints on memory management to avoid crashes due to not enough memory which the game engine GRAC2 is prone to do. It is also a PAL game. Hope you play it and enjoy it. Let me know what you think. Now off to finish Geo's Quest 3 "Gateway to Nowhere" Last edited by pngcan; 22 February 2023 at 15:42. Great news, thank you so much! I just hope it doesn't contain a virus, as in a previous version (had to reinstall my WB from scratch because of that).

I am so so sorry for that. I only discovered last year that the unfinished game I uploaded way back in 2002 was infected. I found out the GRAC2 archive I downloaded from Aminet back then was the culprit. I started on GQ1 to learn how to use GRAC 2 using the actual disks I bought from Edmond Clay, but lost them, so I used the Aminet archive that was uploaded. It appeared that was infected and I had no idea. (embarrassingly). But I ran VirusZ on the file before I uploaded this time.

Hello friends, I received an email from someone that downloaded the file (thank you Treveur) and explained the XADMaster library issue to me. Those who are using the XADMaster library for their archivers, OS3.9 UnArc, Avalanche, Voodoo will experience the dreaded space bug with this archive. That is XADMaster converts spaces to underscores, and literally every data file in the game has a space in its name. Unfortunately, I can't change the file names because they are created by GRAC2 in this format GRAC (file#).(file) eg. GRAC 12.room. So if I change it the executable GQ2.GRAC2 will not recognize the file and will crash.
So regrettably you will need to unpack with another archiver that doesn't use the XADMaster library. Last edited by pngcan; 21 February 2023 at 20:42. |

@pngcan
No worries, mate, happens to the best of us, I should have checked the file before running it. ![]() Thanks for the game, looking forward to sinking my teeth in it. |

I tried to run the game last night and it crashed.
My setup: A2000 NTSC, Vampire + Octagon SCSI card with ZuluSCSI. The game causes the system to lockup/crash once the game starts and the music starts to play. Furthermore the screen looks shifted vertically upwards and has a black border on the bottom portion. I know the docs specify 2mb chip ram is required. I gave it a shot anyways. My feeling is that there should be a chip ram check upon launch, if this is indeed a requirement, and the startup should cause a graceful exit. If the game is intended for play only on PAL systems, here too, there should be a graceful exit. (I do have a megachip. It's currently not installed. This will be tested on the weekend) |

Thanks for the comment ProfPlum. It is unfortunate you could not play this on such an awesome Amiga system; but alas, as you and the documentation indicated it requires 2mb chip ram and it is PAL. The vertical shifting of the screen is the NTSC/PAL conflict. I experienced it as well, but my monitor has the capability of adjusting the vertical and horizontal so I was able to correctly position it on the screen by adjusting the monitor. When I started the game 22 years ago it was on an NTSC 1200, but they are very rare to find these days and I had to go with a PAL. Your suggestion is a good one, although there is no way to incorporate that in the GRAC2 program itself (it is limited to specific AMOS commands) I could incorporate it into the load file which currently only assigns the game and calls the GRAC2 executable. I will take a look at that. Last edited by pngcan; 22 February 2023 at 15:40. |

2000!? Wow. Resurrecting a project that old is an accomplishment in itself. |
