Will the Amiga 500 or Amiga 1000 run workbench 2?

Well I guess the subject say it all - Will the Amiga 500 or Amiga 1000 run workbench 2?

If they won't run workbench 2, is there a way of changing a chip to make it run it?

The Amiga 500 plus will run Workbench 2

A standard Amiga 500 won't. Neither will a standard Amiga 1000. The reason is they both come with a kickstart 1.x chip. You need at least Kickstart 2.0 to run Workbench 2

If you can find yourself a kickstart rom, then it's a plug n play operation. Take out the old rom, put in the new rom.

I have found a shop that still does Amiga repairs and upgrades. The technician said he could do the upgrade for me and provide the disk for $50 Australian dollars.

It works out to be ₤18.31 (rounded to 2 decimal places)

Is this too much?

You live in Sydney, therefore, the technician you speak of is Jeff, who runs Unitech Electronics

(which is the official distributor for Amiga related stuff). He's a good guy, but I know him best for overpricing everything (although I did buy quite a few CD32 games from him a while back for $5 each...Worms CD32 cost me $15 from him, but that came in a pretty box

)

What exactly did he say he would upgrade it to? Kickstart 2, 3 or 3.1? I'm guessing 3.1, but maybe he said 2

I think it's a little expensive for a Kickstart 2 (if it's 3 or above, it's good), but, considering I can't find any type of Kickstarts anywhere it's probably the best deal for you(sometimes in the Trading Post you'll see an Amiga 1200 for sale at a cheap price, but that's it).

I think you should do it only due to the lack of Amiga support in Australia

Actually the shop was called "Outdoor Computer Games" and it is located in Emerton (near Mount Druit) in Sydney.

I will have to go see Jeff and see if he can do it any cheaper or sooner.

Oh yeah, I asked for "Kickstart 2" or higher because i was told that was what i needed to be able to read PC formated floppies.

I've never heard of them? They stock Amiga stuff?

I think it would be better to go to them, since it's probably alot cheaper

But. Check out Unitech anyway. He may surprise you (possibly)

there are some CrossDos versions that do not need KS2.0 ... But if you still want to upgrade your 500 to 2.0, it's an easy operation

I wouldn't touch such machines anyway, specially the 1000. leave it untouched as it is now! If I was you I'd look for an old CrossDos that works on 1.3 and the like. Somewhere I read CrossDos 5 works fine on a 500. Can anybody confirm this?

It was a commercial program that allowed the Amiga to read PC formatted (and Mac I think) floppy disks. But from certain Workbench versions onwards, this was built-in.

So, you could use it to transfer files between Amiga and PC.

CrossDos is the proggy you need to read PC Disks, not the workbench. What you heard is what Cody said, workbench versions 3.0 and 2.1 came with it built-in.

So you dont need to install a new kickstart in your machine, just get a CrossDos that works on a 1.3 machine

There's a filesystem that I used to use called Multidos. It's freely available (possibly on Aminet). This, I can guarantee, works with Kickstart 1.3 Amiga's

But. The reason I didn't mention it is, how exactly will this be transferred to his Amiga?

CrossDos (or Multidos) would be great, but as Amigaboy stated that at the moment it is a vicious circle.

There is a meeting for a local (Sydney / Australia) Amiga user group on the second of next month. There I’m sure I will be able to get any and all software needed.

Tonight I will be picking up a CD drive will also solve the file transfer problem.
