C64 version looks like .. well a C64 game.

In the end of the amiga preview video you clearly see why it's a preview. The MASSIVE boss is actually made of 4 AGA sprites, 6 colors. It's slightly buggy because of the sprite clipping I'm currently having a hard time with. It also remains displayed after a game over.

But apart from that the game is pretty much playable and also tough like the original.

no9 joined the team to recreate the short tunes (intro, in-game, highscore) which he of course re-did to the perfection, which allows better overall sample rate and looping, and less memory for the game.

Another great achievement in just a few days!

Been integrating those changes, and still adjusting some issues & implementing optimizations. Not ready yet, but the buglist is decreasing at least!

I think you meant to say either more memory for the game, or less memory usage

memory memory for the whole system, I mean

I'm trying to make the game run on unexpanded A1200. Any other config is cheating.

New preview in the zone. A lot less flicker, still graphical issues, but a lot less!

I just tried it in WinUAE and if you set the CPU mutltiplier to 4x and run cycle exact the sprites do flicker quite badly. Set it to 8x or turn of cycle exact and its fine. Possibly a speed related issue.

Definitely a speed issue, works fine on 060 but flickers on stock A1200 (only played a couple of minutes). I'm sure it'll be worked out.

@tomcat666 your video is private we can't watch it;

I just found out that WinUAE "cycle exact" emulates poor chipmem speed. The game is also darn slow on 68060 when running code in chipmem.

Looks that the game needs fastmem. Not sure if I can make it work properly on a stock A1200.

Yeah, you'd need 8MB fastRAM at the very least

The game work nice on original 030, A4000 with 8MB.
The boss fight I see some gfx corruption.
Fun game

boss fight is another known issue. Time to optimize stuff more.. Got some more ideas. Not sure if it will cut it, but now at least I know how to test it (cycle exact really kills the performance, and I thought that WinUAE didn't emulate chipmem speed, but it does!)

This is so awesome! Great work jotd, you're on fire!

Wish the damned sound wasn't as annoying but still, minor issue. Plays real nice

No9 suggested a key to turn off the annoying "music". I'm going to implement it

Otherwise, I think I know why it's flickering on slow machines. Let's hope I'm not mistaken because I was under the impression that I pretty much optimized everything.

The austerity of Xevious is what makes it Xevious.

Strongly agree here.

Don't forget that Xevious has plenty of sequels that can be ported later. They all knock it out of the park musically. Fardraut Saga would be easy to port, Xevious Arrangement would be a big challenge, Solvalou would be nearly impossible and Xevious 3D/G would be actually impossible.

There's also the spinoff game Grobda, which is also easy to port.

I think Xevious Arrangement (All the other Arrangement games too) would be feasible with a 68030 CPU and some fastRAM. Only 4 sound channels really limits the music though
